    In the final encounter at Boyaca. Santander cut off Spanish advance force near a bridge over the Boyaca River. Meanwhile Bolivar’s troops attacked the main force a half mile away in the year of 1820.

    Bolívar then went to Angostura in Venezuela. Where he announced his scheme. To establish the Republic of Gran Colombia.

    A army of about 3,000 men under generals Simon Boivar and Francisco de Paula Santander command first surprised and defeated the Spaniards in preliminary engagements at Gameza July 12 and Pantano de Vargas July 25 and captured Tunja on August 5 in 1820.

    They took about 1,800 prisoners captive including the Spanish commander. Bolivar then captured Bogota on August 10 and was hailed as the liberator of New Granada or Columbia. He set up a provisional government with Santander as vice president and acting head.

    The Republic of Gran Colombia got involved and in 1821 laid the basis for a regular government at a congress in Angostura which is now Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela. Their republic was organized by the Congress of Cucuta in 1821.

    Francisco de Paula Santander, born April 2, 1792, Rosario, New Granada now Colombia—died May 6, 1840, Bogota, soldier and statesman who fought beside Simon Bolivar in the war for South American independence and who served as president of the newly formed New Granada now Colombia from 1833 until 1837. Not long after the war he died also died.
