Betsy Ross History Tea Timeline

  • Birth

    She was literaly born on January 1st, I could actually find the date.
  • Learning To Sew

    Betsy Ross went to a public quaker school when she was little. There she learned how to sew. This would help shape her into the person she became. Without this skill Betsy would've never been able to sew the American Flag.
  • Upholstery Business

    Somewhere between 1773 and 1775 Betsy and her husband John created a business. However after his death the business didn't end. Betsy kept it up and worked it on her own. This is the business that will eventually be contacted by George Washington to make the Flag.
  • No Longer a Quaker

    Betsy decides to run off with her coworker John Ross and Get married. However he is not a quaker. In Betsy's family marrying someone from a different religion is frowned upon. Therefore Betsy is shunned by her family and decides to convert to Christianity.
  • Returns To The Quaker's Lifestyle

    On this day Betsy Ross's first husband died. His name was John Ross. When they got married Betsy converted to Christianity, but now that her first husband has passed she is once again back at the life of a Quaker.
  • Joined The"Fighting Quakers"

    Betsy Ross is a Quaker. Quakers are not llowed to have guns or do anything violent. However and new group was formed and called themselves "Fighting Quakers". This is a group of Quakers who still believed the same things as Quakers but wanted to be able to fught and help their country during the war. On May 21, 1776 Betsy Ross decided to become one of them.
  • Committee of 3 Meeting

    The Committee of 3 has a meeting with Betsy Ross. The committee is made up of George Washington, George Ross, and Robert Morris. This meeting led to the sewing of the first American flag.
  • Finalizing The Flag's Image

    When George Washington called on Betsy Ross to make the first American Flag he gave her a plan of what him and the continental congress had thought the flag should look like. They thought the stars on the flag should have 6 points. Betsy argued that they should only have 5 because then the cloth could be folded and cut with a single snip making it much easier to create. Eventually to committee came to agree with her and the plan was finalized. The flag would have 5 points on each star.
  • Makes The Flag

    In June of 1776 Betsy Ross makes the first American Flag of the United States of America. This request was put in by the future president of the United States, George Washington. Though we have a different flag today this is what represented our nation after the Revolutionary War.
  • Retiring From Sewing

    At the age of 76 Betsy decided it was time to retire from sewing. She had been in trade for the fifty years prior. But at her old age her eyes were begging to go bad and she decided that retiring was for the best.
  • Blind

    By the time Betsy was 81 years old she was completely blind. She lived her last three years this way. Betsy lived with her daughter Jane's family during this time.
