Bonfires of the Vanities - Savonarola
1497 A.D - Savonarola provoked "Bonfires of the Vanities", which was burning of religious books. He even caused artists to throw in their work to the fire and made poets stop writing too. Later Savonarola was crucified and burned along with his works of literature. This is censorship because religious books were burned, and Savonarola's works of literature were burned. -

Translations of the New Testament Burned
1525 B.C. - 6,000 copies of the New Testament translated to English by William Tyndale were burned. They were burned by the church in England (Ironically) because they believed that it should only be written in Latin. This is book censorship because they censored the New Testament to most English people. They did this by burning them. -
Nazis Burn Books
1933 - Nazis burned books because they considered them "Un-German" These books were mostly by Freud, Einstein, Thomas Mann, Jack London, and H.G. Wells. In fact, most of these authors were Jewish, so that is another reason why they burn their books. This is a form of censorship because the Nazis wanted to look perfect, and books that weren't praising Germany were burned. -
U.S.A. PATRIOT Act
2001 A.D. - The U.S.A. PATRIOT Act was passed because of the terrorist attack on 9/11. It allowed the FBI to know what people check out at libraries. This is censorship because they can tell what people are checking out, and what they are doing on the library websites. From there, they can censor certain books. -
Earliest Book Censorship - Socrates
399 B.C, - Socrates was a Greek philosopher that was taken to trial for teaching his students controversial information. He was then found guilty and sentenced to drink poison. This is the most primative form of book censorship because it wasn't books that were censored, but the information that would and could be in books. This was because they didn't have books, but it was information that would probably put into books somehow.
