    Gabriel Prosser's  Rebellion
    Gabriel Prosser planned a rebellion in Richmond for August 30, 1800. The rebellion was postponed due to rain. Gabriel warned Virginia's Governor, James Monroe, who called out the state militia Gabriel escaped downriver to Norfolk, but he was potted and betrayed there by another slave for the reward offered by the state. But the slave didn't receive the full reward. Gabriel Prosser, his 2 brothers, and 23 other slaves were hung on October 10, 1800

    The German Coast Uprising

    A group of forcefully enslaved African had a meeting on Jan. 6, 1811 to spread the word of the planned uprising among the slaves at plantations up and down the German Coast (an early settlement in what is now Louisiana, Located above New Orleans). The Revolt began on Jan. 8, 1811 at the Andry plantation. After striking and badly wounding Manuel Andry, the slaves killed his son Gilbert On the end of the first day roughly 200-500 slaves had joined the revolt The revolt ended on Jan 11, 1811

  • The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850

    The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
    In 1843, many slaves were escaping to the North. The Act penalized official who didn't arrest an alleged runaway slave, and made them liable to a fine of $1,000 or $29,000 in present day value It also penalized anyone who was feeding or providing shelter. If you were either feeding or providing shelter for any fugitive slaves you had to serve a 6 month sentence and a fine of $1,000. Non-Runaway slaves had to provide a hand written document that states that they are free and not a runaway.
