    The Free Trade Agreement is passed by the House and Senate, ending the long debate. Describing the agreement from the government's website; "Key elements of the agreement included the elimination of tariffs, the reduction of many non-tariff barriers, and it was among the first trade agreements to address trade in services. It also included a dispute settlement mechanism for the fair and expeditious resolution of trade disputes."

    The Great Ice Storm of 1998, which is a massive combination of five smaller successive ice storms which hit a strip of land from eastern Ontario to southern Quebec to Nova Scotia in Canada, and bordering areas from northern New York to central Maine in the United States. It causes massive damage to trees and electrical infrastructure all over the area, leading to widespread long-term power outages.

    Wayne Gretzky plays his final NHL game. He played at Madison Square Garden with the Rangers against the Ottawa Senators which ended with a score of 2-2.
  • Canada Goes To Afghanistan

    Operation APOLLO is launched which Canada's military contribution to the international campaign against terrorism from October 2001 to October 2003. At sea, Canada was the first coalition nation after the United States to send warships to the Southwest Asia operational theatre. It was Canada’s largest naval commitment since the Second World War. Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) ships were sent to the Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf with the principal task of maintaining control of the maritime area.
  • SARS Outbreak

    Cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) are discovered in Canada. The disease kills 44 out of 251 cases, which is the highest fatality precentage of the 17 countries who reported cases. SARS was a relatively rare disease and to date, there is no cure or vaccine, although antibiotics are used to combat it. The outbreak in Toronto is the largest outside of Asia.

  • Robert Pickton Convicted

    Robert Pickton, a serial killer, also called the Pig Farmer Killer, was convicted of killing six women and sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 25 years, which was the harshest sentence available then. He is suspected of killing 49 women, but that was never proved.

    Stephen Harper formally apologizes to the Aboriginal people for the treatment of the children who were forced into residential schools. Currently (June 2015), MPs are attempting to get the Pope to formally apologize as well.

    The 21st Winter Olympics are held in Vancouver, British Columbia. Canada wins 14 gold, 7 silver, and 5 bronze medals. This broke the the record for most gold ever won at a single Winter Olympics by a single country (record previously held by Soviet Union and Norway with 13).

    The Kyoto Protocol is to prevent global warming, greenhouse gas emissions, and lower negative effects of said emissions by 2020. Canada withdraws from the Kyoto Protocol officially, saying that we were not going to be able to meet the restrictions by 2020 and could not afford the $14 billion in penalties.

    Canadian government lies about the cost of the F-35 fighter jets they are purchasing. They publicly say it will cost $9 billion dollars for 65 jets, but ends up being about $13 billion for the same amount.

    CHEO Job Cuts
    CHEO plans to cut over 50 jobs to meet its 2015/16 budget.Despite their rising costs, funding has not changed since 2012. While necessary to cut that many jobs, it will not take away from service level, as they are trying only to cut unimportant positions.
