    Company History Benz Patent Motor Car, the first automobile (1885 – 1886) The first stationary gasoline engine developed by Carl Benz was a one-cylinder two-stroke unit which ran for the first time on New Year's Eve 1879.

    After seeing Panhard Daimler-designed V-twin engine demonstrated at the Paris Exposition of 1889 and inquiring into the engine's weight and power, Armand Peugeot stated his interest in a lightweight motor vehicle powered by the engine. This was communicated to Daimler, who worked with Wilhelm Maybach to develop the vehicle.

    The vintage era in the automotive world was a time of transition. The car started off in 1919 as still something of a rarity, and ended up, in 1930, well on the way towards ubiquity. In fact, automobile production at the end of this period was not matched again until the 1950s.
