  • Compromise of 1850

    Under the compromise of 1850, California was admitted as a free state, slave TRADE was outlawed in Washington, DC, the rest of the Mexican cession was decided by popular sovereignty, and the fugitive slave law was passed. All of these compromises were made to keep both the south and north "happy", but this did not end up happening.

    Under this, northerners were requried to send escpaed slaves back to their owners or they would go to jail. The north hated this because it made them feel like they had to support slavery or go to jail! As a result, many people rebelled and mobs attacked marshalls and vigilance committees helped runaways.

    A novel published by Harriet Beacher Stowe that exposes the hardships of slavery to the uninformed public. It was an important aspect of anti-slavery and helped others to see slavery as a moral issue.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854

    Under the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the remaining of the La. Purchase was divided into territories of Kansas and Nebraska. In addition, slavery status was decided by popular sovereignty and Kansas was the testing ground for it. As a result, border rufficans from Missouri corssed the border into Kansas to vote slave then moved back, and this causes many problems!

    Brooks beat Senator Charles Sumner in the halls of Congress as a result of tensions rising on the topic of the expansion of slavery. The Kansas- Nebraska act and the Missouri Compromise were several laws that provoked the attack in senate due to their contradictions on the 36 30 line.
  • Birth of the Republican Party

    Again, as a result of the Missouri Compromise and The Kansas- Nebraska act contradicting with whether they were slave or free states, many anti-slavery supporters were outraged and wanted to develop their own party. In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on June 17, 1856, the Republican Party was offically announced as a "political force" with a main goal being anti-slavery.
  • Dred Scott v. Sanford

    Dred Scott v. Sanford
    Dred Scott was a slave from Missouri who then moved to free soil and resided there. After, he attempted to sue for his freedom and was denied it because the supreme court said he had no standing to sue in federal court because he as an African American could not be a US citizen. They stated that "the federal government had no power to regulate slavery in the federal territories acquired after the creation of the United States".
  • John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry

    John Brown as well as his supporters were all die-hard abolitionists and were seen as very radical back in the day. Brown and his men left with a mission (and did) captured well known citizens and seize the federal armory and arsenal. Brown's plan was that the local slaves would join him in the rebellion however this was not a success.

    The election of 1860 was an immediate cause of the Civil War. President Lincoln of the Republican party (who was anti-slave) was elected president and during his inauguration, seven southern states already delcared their secession from the union.
