in order to keep the Senate equal when Missouri became a slave state, Maine became a free state and created a line at 36,30 to decide if future states were free or slave all states south of the line were slave states and north of the line were free states. -

in 1860 South Carolina became the first state to secede from the union so they could keep slavery in there state. this was the last straw that caused the start of the civil war.
