Causes of the American Revolution

  • Royal Proclmation

    Royal Proclmation
    The British wanted to stop conflicts between natives and colonists so they issued a proclamation banning settlement west of the appalachian mountains. The settlers were mad and wanted to keep expanding. There was little done to inforce the proclamation and as a result the colonists began to settle into this territory.

  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    The British wanted more money to get out of debt, so they began placing taxes on sugar and other items entering the colonies. Settlers were angry about the tax and tried to smuggle goods. The British was very strict when inforing the taxes, which led to less smuggling.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The British placed taxes on all printed matter (Materials had to be printed on stamped paper). Settlers began to protest and some were violent. This led to unified resistance amoung colonists and it was eventually repealed in 1766.
  • Declaratory Act

    Declaratory Act
    The British wanted to assert power and authority. Parliment has full power over the colonies. The colonies do not notice much change and it remains unsolved, nothing happens.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
    The British were now collecting taxes at the ports, duties were placed on items like: dye, tea, glass, and lead. Officials were conducting search warrants if there was any suspicion of smuggling goods. Colonists refused the law, protested, boycotted goods and started to make their own. The result was colonists continued to act out and there was an increase in searches. The Townshend act was eventually repealed.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    British sent troops into the colonies to inforce laws and silence the protests. One night 50-60 colonists were harassing troops and British troops opened fire on unarmed colonists. The colonists spread the word across the 13 colonies. As a result colonists created songs and pieces of art dedicated to the Boston Massacre. Some British Soldiers were eventually trialed for murder.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    The British wanted to save the East India Company frrom bankrupcy, so they placed taxes on tea. Colonists refused to buy tea. A group of rebels dressed up in indian disguises and dumped all the tea into the ocean, this will be known as the Boston Tea Party. Britain eventually closed the Boston port as a result.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    Britain wanted to strengthen thier control over the colonies and punish Boston for the Boston Tea Party. Britain issued four new rules. Britain closed the Boston port, forbade town meetings, trialed officials with crimes commited in massachusetts somehwhere else, and colonists now had to provide British solidiers with housing and food. As a result colonists sent money to Massachusetts to help. Colonists started to view themselves as American and not British.
  • Quebec Act

    Quebec Act
    To please France and remove threat of war, Britain extended Quebec's boundaries. Colonists were unhappy, especially about the loss of land and how Roman Catholics would be near them and have more land. As a result colonists became more united as Americans.
