The Missouri Line
A line that divided slave states and free states. Southerners didn’t like it because they didn't know how much land they got.. It was made in 1820 and on the 36 parallel. -
The Wilmot Proviso
The Wilmot Proviso was made to eliminate slavery within the land acquired from the Mexican war. -
The Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 was a package of five separate bills passed by the United States Congress in September 1850, which defused a four-year political confrontation between slave and free states regarding the status of territories acquired during the Mexican–American War (1846–1848). -
Fugitive Slave Act
It was passed on September 18th, 1850. If a free color man in the north used to be a slave, he/she must be returned to their original owner. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom’s Cabin was a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It depicted the lives of slaves in the south. In fact, it was banned in the south due to controversy. -
Benjamin Pierce's son is killed.
He died on January 16, 1853 because of a train crash before his father’s inauguration. This caused Franklin to be a drunken wreck and depressed in the office. -
Bleeding Kansas
Because of the Kansas-Nebraska act, people came from all over the country to help Kansas decide whether to become or a free state or a slave state. It happened between 1854-1861. It was described as a state-wide Civil War. -
The Republican Party.
In February of 1854, anti-slavery Whigs had begun meeting the upper midwestern states to form a new party. In Wisconsin on March 20th, 1854, the Republican Party was born. -
The Kansas/Nebraska Act
It was passed by the US on May 30th, 1854. It was for Nebraska and Kansas to decide if they wanted to be slave states or free states. This was the cause of Bleeding Kansas. -
Caning of Charles Sumner
South Carolina Senator Booker beats Massachusetts senator Sumner with a cane after he insulted many others. -
The Dred Scott Case
Dred Scott’s owner moved to a free state, but Dred was still a slave. He took it to court and the judge ruled that african americans were possessions, and not citizens. Therefore, no state was a free state. -
The Lincoln-Douglas Debates
The Lincoln-Douglas Debates were a series of seven debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. Lasted between August 21st, 1858 to October 15th, 1858. -
Harper’s Ferry
John Brown once attempted to rebel against slavery. He and his army snuck into Harper's Ferry on October 16th, 1859. Half of his men and two of his sons were killed and John Brown was wounded and captured. He was sentenced to death on December 2nd, 1859. -
The Election of 1860
The election of 1860 was one of the main causes of the civil war. Lincoln became president with only 40% of the popular vote. Later several states seceded from the union. -
The Southern Secession
The Southern Secession was also known as the outbreak of the Civil War. Southern states began to leave the nation. -
