Causes of the Civil War

  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri became a slave state to balance out Maine becoming a free state.
  • Compromise of 1850

    -Allowed California to enter the union as a free state
    -Divided the rest of the Mexican cession into New Mexico and Utah territories
    -Ended slave trade in Washington D.C.
    -Included a strict slave fugitive law
    -Settled a border dispute with Texas and New Mexico
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Required citizens to capture slaves who had escaped or were attempting to escape their owners. It caused courts to get set up specifically for slave. Caused the northerners to get upset and pass their own laws.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin Published

    A book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It showed the evils of slavery and changed how northerners viewed it.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Settlers that moved to Kansas and Nebraska where the people who got to settle the issue of slavery by using popular sovereignty. They both became slave states.
  • Dred Scott case

    Dred Scott was a slave whose owner died. This helped him file a lawsuit, but his case was denied when it had gotten to the supreme court.
  • John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry

    John Brown was an abolitionist who led an antislavery group. He planned to help slaves escape by giving them weapons to protect themselves, but he got caught and was sentenced to death.
  • Election of 1860

    Held in South Carolina, states picked a president to vote for based on whether or not they supported slavery. Ended with Abraham Lincoln winning.
  • South Carolina secedes

    South Carolina was the first state to secede. Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi, and Texas all seceded after it. They were allowed to secede under the constitution.
