This popular sovereignty act was to split kansas and nebraska into a free or slave state though popular sovereignty. This made the south very happy but kansas became a fight over slavery. -
Dred scott ruling
Dred scott was a slave who sued for freedom because he was taken to places that slaves were illegal in and so he claimed he was a free man. this eventually came to the supreme court they ruled that slaves were not citizens. Slaves were also ruled property which was protected by the fifth amendment so congress could not ban slavery anywhere. -
John browns raid
John brown wanted to arm slaves so he went to a federal arsenal to start a slave rebellion but slaves were scared of even more harsh treatment coming to them. he was tried for treason, was found guilty and hung. -
The 1860 election
abraham lincoln was elected winning all but 3 votes. causing the southern states to leave or secede the united states of america.
