    -New territories won from Mexico would be free
    - California would be admitted as a free state, and congress could not pass any laws banning slavery.

    • The fugitive slave act allowed former slaves in the north to be captured and returned to their original plantations.
    • This increased the tension and was the cause of John Browns raids.
  • Bleeding Kansas 1855

    • 5,000 people came from Missouri to vote for slavery.
    • Anti-slavery groups formed their own government.
    • The new government was then attacked by pro slave groups.
    • Due to this behavior John Brown went on to murdering several of pro slavery people.

    • Dred Scott was a slave who was brought back from the north, and sued his slave owner for his freedom.
    • The trial backfired because he was property of his slave owner.

    • John Brown wanted to encourage slaves to fight against violently for there freedom.
    • He attempted to capture the arsenal, hoping to arm slaves.
    • All of Browns men including were captured and killed.
    • People against slavery were inspired by John Brown, and and realized the major issue, that caused massive tensions.

    • Abraham Lincoln won the election.
    • Since Abraham Lincoln was from the north and against slavery, southern states begin to secede from the Union.

    • Southern states felt unfair tariffs, that are more lenient to the north.
    • John C. Calhoun announced that any state could pronounce a law unconstitutional.
    • The Government denied their argument.
    • Henry Clay came up with the Missouri Compromise to settle this dispute.
