Causes of the Civil War

  • Missouri Compromise

To keep the Senate equal, Missouri became a slave state and Maine a free one. The 36-30 was also set for future states.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

An act that passed saying all citizens were required to catch escaped slaves and would be fined and put in jail for letting a slave go.
  • Compromise of 1850

The compromise was over the land not included in the Mexican Cession; no slave polices were changed but some thought the Missouri compromise should be changed.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin was Published

A book written by Harriet Stowe was published and changed many minds about the cruelty and injustice of slavery.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

A bill was proposed by Douglas for a new government for the Louisiana Purchase in which the new states could vote about slavery, which became Kansas and Nebraska.
  • South Carolina Secedes

There was a lack of unity in South Carolina so after seceding, many left the country.
  • Dred Scott Case

The Dred Scott Case was a case that ended up setting back Civil Rights because it stated that a state couldn't ban slavery and just because a slave had been taken into free land, didn't mean that they could be free.
  • John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry

Abolitionist John Brown set up a raid to gain control of the Harpers Ferry arsenal so the slaves would revolt but none did and Brown was caught.
  • The Election of 1860

The Democrats became split and in an election, Abe Lincoln won and that was bad for the south because they knew he didn't approve of slavery.
