Cell Theory Assignment

  • Hooke

    Hooke
    • Hooke published a book called Micrographia, in which he listed and described things that he discovered using a microscope.
    • He discovered the cell and helped prove Leeuwenhoek's discoveries about animal cells as correct.
    • He looked at cork under a microscope and saw cell wall's in the cork tissue and that is how he discovered plant cells
    • He is the scientist that coined the word cell because the cells of the cork reminded him of the cells in a monastery.
  • Leeuwenhoek's

    Leeuwenhoek's
    • Leewonhoek discovered "protozoa" and called them "animalcules". He was the first to describe and witness a living cell. He improved the miscroscope and studied things like bacteria (single celled organisms).
    • He made 500 microscopes in his lifetime and would test different things under them. He would write his findings in letters to the Royal Society of London.
    • He was inspired by Hooke' s novel and he became famous from his letters of discoveries. Helped prove Hooke's findings as true.
  • Dutrochet

    • Formulated the idea that the cell is the fundamental element of organization.
-He noticed the similarities in chemical and physical processes of plants and animals which is how he directed his studies to plant and animal physiology.
    • He discovered and named Osmosis.
    • He contributed a lot to the cell theory but many of his ideas were simply ideas and not facts because he used more of instinct rather than microscopes to prove himself right.
  • Dujardin

    • He was the first to group single celled organisms.
    • After looking under the microscope, he stated that many living organisms are composed of a single cell and observed internal substances in all living cells.
    • He disproved Ehrenberg's theory that tiny animals have the same organs as large ones. Also helped prove Dutrochet's instincts as correct and factual theories.
  • Schleiden

    Schleiden
    • His studies of plants under the microscope led him to conclude that all parts of a plant consists of cells or their derivatives, an idea he called "phytogenesis". -credited with the discovery of the plant cell -recognized that plant and animal cells are similar
    • Schleiden believed in free cell formation which basically states that cells spontaneously generate. -Schleiden determined that there are both plant and animal cells.
  • Schwann

    • He declared that all living things are composed of cells and cell parts. -credited with the discovery of the animal cell -Schwann remembered seeing similar structures in the cells of the notochord and realized the importance of connecting the two phenomena. The results led him to his discovery that the cell makes up all living things.
  • Virchow

    • He was doing experiments with diseases when he discovered that cells come from other cells. -His work built on the work of Schwann and he helped Francesco Redi's claim that there was no such thing as spontaneous generation. -He disproved Shleiden's theory of free cell formation.
-credited with saying "all cells come from preexisting cells.
