Cell Theory Project

  • Discovery of Cell

    Discovery of Cell
Robert Hooke's description of biological organisms under a microscope allowed him to discover the cell structure in cork. The term 'cell' was coined by Hooke because it resembles the cell where the monks lived. However, his description of cell gave no indication of its composition. He came up with the first cell model.
  • Description of Blood cells

    Description of Blood cells
Antoine van Leeuwenhoek perfected the lenses of the microscope that Hooke created originally so that he could look at fibers on clothing, and because of this he was the first person to accurately describe the red blood cell and sperm cells. His discovery came to light through correspondence with the Royal Institute.
  • Bacteria and Protisist

Leeuwenhoek discovered in 1683 bacteria and parasitic and free-living protist which are unicellular organisms. He also realized that the fertilization process requires the sperm cell to enter the egg cell.
  • Nucleus Discovery

    Nucleus Discovery
Robert Brown was the first person to see the Nucleus of the cell. He first called it Areola. His study of plants allowed him to describe how the cell actually looked and proved that plant cells were made of things smaller than cells.
  • All plant tissues are made of cells

All plant tissues are made of cells
Matthias Schleiden concluded that all plant parts are made of cells and that an embryonic plant organism arises from the one cell. He thought that cells reproduced because inanimate matter in cells crystallized.
  • Original Cell Theory

Theodor Schwan in 1839 stated all animal tissue and plant tissue were both made of cells. This ended the debates that plants and animals were different in structure. He created the first two rules of the cell theory: 1. Cells are organisms and all cells are made of one or more cells 2. The cell is the basic unit of structure for all organisms. He came to the same conclusion about cells being the basic unit of life.
  • Diseases

    Diseases
Rudolf Virchow stated that diseases attacked cells and caused them to malfunction. He discovered and named it Leukemia because he used autopsy tissue. His discoveries advanced the field of medicine. He also stated that every cell comes from a preexisting cell. This would become the third rule in the cell theory
