Hooke's Contribution to Cell Theory
Robert Hooke discovered the cell. He discovered it by finding a honeycomb-like structure in a cork slice using a primitive compound microscope. He only saw cell walls as this was dead tissue. He coined the term "cell" for these individual compartments he saw. He discovered the cell but not everything on the inside. This is better than previous discoveries because no one before him had discovered cells yet. -
Leeuwenhoek's Contribution to Cell Theory
Leeuwenhoek made several discoveries on microscopes, eventually publishing a letter to the Royal Society where he included detailed drawings of what he saw. Among these was the first protozoa and bacteria discovered. Leeuwenhoek’s contribution was that he discovered a microscope to pave the path for more microscopes to be discovered and to view the inside of a cell. This is better than Hooke's discovery because he has invented a way to now look at the inside of a cell and see its contents. -
Brown's Contribution to Cell Theory
He discovered the nucleus in plant cells. This was better than Leeuwenhoek because now we are starting to discover the inside of the cell and the cell's makeup. He discovered this while he was scrutinizing the epidermis of a collection of orchids with his microscope, Brown found that the cells contained an opaque spot and determined that this was a nucleus. -
Schleiden's Contribution to Cell Theory
He proposed that all plant tissues have cells and that they are the basic building block of life. This was the first generalized statement about cells. His discovery is better than Brown’s because now we know that cells are in every plant and are the basic building blocks that make up all plants. Schleiden used Brown’s discovery and his own observations about plant cells to come up with his part in the cell theory. -
Schwann's Contribution to Cell Theory
He discovered that animal tissue is made of cells. This is better than Schleidan because now we are starting to discover that more organisms besides plants are made of cells. He discovered this by pursuing research on animals because of his and others success in plant research. -
Virchow's Contribution to Cell Theory
He said that all cells develop from existing cells and was first to propose that diseased cells come from healthy ones. His discovery is better than Schwann's because now we are realizing that we don’t use random matter for new cells but we are using the existing cells for new ones. Virchow did not discover this part of the cell theory truthfully. He found the work of Robert Remak, liked and believed the idea and published it as his own.
