Cell Theory Timeline

  • Robert Hooke

-Robert Hooke used the term cells to describe units in plant tissue (thick cell walls could be observed). Of course he saw only cell walls because cork cells are dead and without protoplasm. He drew the cells he saw and also coined the word cell.
-Described a honeycomb-like network of cellulae (Latin for little storage rooms) in cork slice using his primitive compound microscope.
-Robert's model is the best of the time because he was first to contribute to the theory of the cell development
  • Antonie Leeuwenhoek

-First to observe bacteria protozoa, and red blood cells in humans and other animals, as well as sperm cells. He studied the structure of plants, the compound eyes of insects, and the life cycles of fleas, aphids, and ants.
-Made his own lens for use in monocular microscopes. Described cells in a drop of pond water using a microscope
-Leeuwenhoek made the field of microscopes advanced and magnified which increased the ability to study bacteria, protozoa, red blood cells, and sperm cells.
  • Robert Brown

-discovered the nucleus in plant cells
-He discovered this while he was studying epidermis of a collection of orchids, found that the cells contained an opaque spot (concluded it to be a nucleus).
-His discovery of the nucleus was better because no other scientist truly observed the insides of a cell.
  • Virchow

-first to demonstrate that the cell theory applies to diseased tissue as well as to healthy tissue and diseased cells derive from the healthy cells. cells come from already existing cells
-He found the work of Robert Remak and published it as his own.
-Virchow's findings proved cells come from already existing cells. this goes to the concept that matter is not created nor destroyed. as for cells, it is not randomly generated, it comes from already existing matter (already existing cells)
  • Matthias Schleiden

-animal tissue being composed of cells ending speculations that plants and animals were fundamentally different in structure. discovered that the cell is the basic unit of life (later known as the cell theory)
-described cellular structures in animal cartilage(rigid extracellular matrix).
-his findings show that animals are too made up of cells (multiple)
  • Theodor Schwann

-Concluded that all plant tissues are composed of cells and that an embryonic plant arose from a single cell. He stated that the cell is the basic building block of all plant matter.
    - investigated plants microscopically and conceived that plants were made up of recongnizable units, or cells.
-Schwann's discovery adds on to the facts that cells are the most basic concept of life and that the cell makes up tissues.
