Cells Theory Timeline

  • Hans and Zacharias Janssen

In 1595, Hans and Zacharias Janssen produced the first compound microscope by combining two convex lenses within a tube. Their Cell Theory was only discovered after they developed the microscope
  • Robert Hooke

    Robert Hooke
in 1665, Robert Hooke viewed a thin cork, he then discovered empty spaces contained by walls and pores (or cells). He calculated the number of cells in a cubic inch was 1,259,712,000. After studying plants, Hooke made the biggest contribution to cell theory with the idea of cells. Without him, cells would probably not even be discovered by now
  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek

In 1683, Anton van Leeuwenhoek built and improved microscopes, while observing pond water, he discovered single-celled organisms that are now called animalcules. He was one of the first few to discover bacteria cells which contributed to his cell theory. In 1683, he discovered bacteria from the saliva of his mouth He used microscopes to view organisms, bacteria and blood cells, he also sketched what he observed.
  • Theodor Schwann

In 1836, Theodor Schwann stated and proved that animal tissues were made of cells. He also wrote the first 2 parts of cell theory. His many contributions to biology was that he improved the development of cell theory, and discovered Schwann cells. He also discovered pepsin.
  • Matthias Schleiden

in 1838, Matthias Schleiden discovered that plants were made out of cells from observing plants, he used this to contribute to Phytogenesis where he named the different parts of a plant cell. He also created what is called the known cell theory, which states that all living things are made up of one or more cells
  • Rudolf Virchow

in 1855, Rudolf Virchow published the aphorism omnis cellula e cellula (every cell stems from another cell) He also stated that diseases ar changes in normal cells. He discovered methods of pathology and stated that cell theory applied to both the diseased and healthy tissue. He said that all cells come from pre-existing ones.
