Change the future... Fight the fire

  • First day as a group

    First day as a group
Today we have chosen a topic inserted on a project called “Eco-Heroes in Action” which is about environmental threats. And now we are a group of five pupils trying to change the world. After a discussion, we had the idea to present a conference about wild fires.
  • We are starting...

    We are starting...
We have a solid idea: we will make a ninety minute conference in Portuguese to aware our 8th graders colleagues for this huge problem affecting our town (Sátão) every summer. We also had a new experience using a new tool: “Map it out” which allowed us to report our action and to make it known all over the world. You can see the map in the side picture.
  • Our aims

 Warning our community for the prevention and the consequences of a fire
 Raising their awareness towards the impact of human action on the ecosystems and on their future
 Spreading the message of our struggle: with little actions we can change the future
  • Visiting a hero

    Visiting a hero
If our project is about forest fires no one is better than a fireman to explain us the most important things about a fire. Cindy went to the local firehouse and she obtained lots of information. They were very helpful and they gave us some leaflets which will be useful to make our powerpoint presentation.
  • Preparing the conference

    Preparing the conference
For our relief, we found a film about forest fires to show in our presentation. It will introduce the topic in a funny way because it’s an animated film and its title is “Planes: Fire & Rescue”. We have already started the powerpoint presentation to support our conference.
  • Problems and solutions

    Problems and solutions
Well, in our English projects we always have problems and today we had the first one: the computer was not saving the film’s montage.
Our colleagues have already been invited to our conference and, because of the fact that they will be there as a volunteer, we will give them what we named an environmental medal. We also have invited our classmates.
  • Few days for a big day

Few days for a big day
Individually, we prepared our oral report including some activities: a brainstorming with the word fire and an activity called “Measure your ecological footprint”.
  • Let's present the conference

    Let's present the conference
Our conference started at 14h35min in the auditorium of our school (Secondary School Frei Rosa Viterbo) and we had fourteen pupils of 8th grade (classes A and B) and two pupils of 11th grade (class A). Our English teacher was there too. We had established that we wanted to reach thirty pupils but there were some problems... We think it was a big moment and our aims were achieved. Despite forest fires being a debated problem all years, all of us have learnt something with this conference.
