Changes to the indigenous peoples

  • 1985

    Native Women Can now marry a non-native , keep their status and own personal enjoyments rights. They are now free of any religious duties if decided to marry outside the family.
  • 1990

    Mohawk warriors set up barriers to protect their land from being turned into a golf course near Quebec. This event helped the mohawk warriors had their voices heard, and stood their grounds for their rights.
  • 1999

    Nunavut was created. It is home to many English and Inuit speaking people. They have created their own legislative assembly giving them access to powers of a federal or provincial official.
  • 1992

    Elijah Harper who is apart of the Manitoba legislature, did not and refused to accept the agreement as it failed to recognize aboriginal rights. HIs action pushed the agreement off of progression and went back to the discussion table to make changes that were more compatible.
  • 1995

    Different nations like stoney point and Kettle first, were two nations who demanded the government to give them their provincial lands rights which were taken away in 1942. A protester was injured and eventually shot dead by the OPP. eventually the land was returned in 2007.
  • 1997

    Aboriginal peoples were finally developing a sustainable and attainable government. They were no longer overlooked by the Canadian government, and were finally able to run a self government. This was a start of a 20 year plan which would establish this new relationship.
  • 1998

    For the first time, the people of Nisga'a sign a treaty with governments of BC. Canada also set a land claim of land which is now more than 2000 square kilo meters.
  • 2006

    The Ontario government barricades a housing development near Caledonia Canada. The land title was taken away in the 1840s. The government buys the construction place and goes to prevent the construction from taking place.
  • 2008

    A 14- year old girl from Attawapiskat FN in northern Ontario. She demanded a new "safe and comfy" school for the community. Unfortunately she was tuned down but the school is projected to finish in the 2013=2014 school year.
  • 2010

    Canada endorses the UN on the rights of indigenous peoples which has been apposed since 2007.
  • 2012

    A social movement was created where they called on "all peaceful people to join" so we could honour indigenous sovereignty to protect the land and water of the FN founders.
  • 2015

    The clip provided by CBC international is speaking about how first nations voices are finally starting to be heard in todays day and age. It also provides a reaction of what our federal government has thought about the whole situation.
