Missouri Compromise
Missouri was admitted as a slave state and Maine was admitted as a free state. Every state admitted afterwords below the Missouri Compromise line (36*30') would be a slave state -
Wilmot Proviso
Pennsylvania congressman David Wilmot called for the prohibition of slavery in these new territories with an attachment to an appropriations bill for establishing the border with Mexico. This would make the south mad because the Union would have more power in congress than the confederate south making it easy to completely outlaw slavery in all the united states. -

People in free states have to assist in capturing escaped slaves. -

Book published by Harriet Beecher Stowe that showed the life of a slave and the conditions slaves are in. -
Kansas/Nebraska Act
Allowed people in Kansas and Nebraska to vote if slavery was legal or not in their state. The act also removed the Missouri Compromise line. -
Dred Scott Case
A slave tried to sue for his freedom because he had lived in two states where slavery is illegal with his master. Ruling was that he had no right to sue because he was black and that slavery was legal everywhere. -
