Scientific Discovery

    Charles Darwin (1809-1882)

Charles Darwin is responsible for theorizing and discovering one of the most controversial yet influential theories of our modern time. Though it took quite a while to actually publish "On the Origin of Species", it changed the outlook on how all living things came to be. He challenged the theory of Creationism and showed evidence of why this theory should be replaced with evolution.

    Paul Oppenheim (1885-1977)

Paul Oppenheim was an instrumental influence in the field of Gestalt psychology, which is a method of psychology that describes ways in which people view the world. Rather than viewing the individual parts, people view the whole, and the sum of the whole is not always equal to the sum of its parts. He published multiple works that greatly contributed to the influence of this widely accepted scientific discovery.

    Neils Bohr (1885-1962)

Neils Bohr was a 20th-century Danish physicist who was the first person who could definitively show that an atom was comprised of protons and neutrons stuck together in the nucleus, while electrons orbit the nucleus in outer shells. Although this is a slight simplification of the true nature of how electrons behave, this was a tremendous advancement in the field of scientific discovery.

    Stephen Toulmin (1922-2009)

Stephen Toulmin is one of the great 20th Century philosophers. Although very influential in a number of areas, he is most known for his work relating to argument models. In his model of an argument, there are claims, grounds for the claim, warrants, rebuttals, backing, and qualifiers. These components contribute to the overall strength of an argument and can be won or lost based on the details. Persuasive Writing (ENG102) largely teaches the Toulmin Model of argumentation to the present day.
