    Charley heard a rumor that there was going to be a shooting war, and it would not take long to battle.
  • Fort Sumter

    This battle led to the Civil War two months later.
  • Company K

    Charley decided to sign up for the war because he thought it would be fun and would not take long. He signed up at Fort Snelling when he was fifteen.
  • Signs up for Civil War

    Charley went to Fort Snelling to sign up for the war even though he was three years younger than the legal age.
  • St. Paul

    Charley and the soldiers headed to St. Paul to catch the boats for their first battle. They also paraded through Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennyslvania, and Maryland.
  • First Battle of Manassas (Bull Run)

    Charley's first battle in the Civil War which he screamed, "make it stop now!". He didn't like his first experience at war. He was so shocked he forgets to fire his gun.
  • Twenty miles

    Charley and the other soldiers heard a rumor about how McClellan doesn't want to fight. They also heard they were marching to Richmond, Virginia.
  • Second Battle of Manassas

    This was the second battle of Bull Run where the enemies retreated and left everything. Charley found this battle much easier.

    Charley and the rest of his fellow soldiers sat in camp for three months and then another one. Disease spreads and killed four soldiers for every one killed in battle.
  • Battle of Richmond

    This battle happened after Charley sat four months in camp and then was called into formation.
  • Nelson

    Charley lost Nelson after he shot himself in the foot because of a belly wound that couldn't be treated. Charley wanted to stay with him, but he could not.
  • Battle of Antietam- McClellan

    Charley helped a fellow soldier, Nelson, shoot himself. Nelson had a stomach wound, and stomach wounds could not be treated. Charley took off his boot,loaded his gun for protection, and gave him water.
  • Rebel Soldier

    Charley was on guard duty and traded with a rebel soldier across the lake. They were alike. Both were farmers and around the same age.
  • Horses

    Charley was forced to shoot and kill the horses for the sick soldiers for food. He was upset about this, and he did not want to.
  • Battle of Chancellorsville

    Charley got a thrill out of killing people in this battle.
  • Surgeon

    Charley went to the surgeon and wanted to see if he was really hit in the soldier. He was not; It was the other man's blood. He also was asked to stack maimed arms and legs to block the wind from the tent.
  • Gettysburg

    Charley felt safe behind the wall at the beginning of the battle. He got shoot twice, blacked out, and he was pretty sure he died.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    The Battle of Gettysburg was the skirmish when the Union was behind a wall, shooting and ducking. Charley felt safe.
  • Home

    Charley returned home and was still alive. He did not die at Gettysburg; He was just severley injured. Charley had a cane, and he took many picnics near the lake.
