    In the 1960's, the term "Chicano" came to be accepted as a symbol of self-determination and ethnic pride. Before this, it was used a deragatory term for children of Mexican Immigrants.

    A team of high school students form the Young Chicanos for Community Action Organization. They discussed different issues affecting Mexican students in barrio schools. They came to be known by the brown berets that they wore, and focused on attaining educational equality and speaking out against police brutality.

    High School Walkout Los Angeles
    To protest and raise awareness of unequal educational and employment opportunities, high school students walked out of the Chicano Moratorium.
  • Madrigal v. Quilligan

    Madrigal v. Quilligan
    The Comisión Femenil Mexicana Nacional won the Madrigal v. Quilligan case, which obtained a moratorium on the compulsory sterilization of women and adoption of bilingual consent forms. Prior to this, many Hispanic women in the US did not understand English and were being sterilized without proper consent.
