    McCandless arrives in Lake Mead National Park
    When he arrived in Lake Mead, there was a flash flood. It was not powerful enough to carry away McCandless's Datsun; however, it did get the engine wet. Soon after, McCandless tried to start the car, but the engine would not catch, and he drained the battery.     Near the beggining of August, Chris's parents hadn't heard from their son since they recieved his grades in the mail. They decided to drive down to Atlanta to visit. When they arrived at his apartment, it was empty. The manager made them aware that Chris had moved out at the end of June.     Shortly before McCandless met Jan Burres and Bob, he was ticketed for hitchhiking near Willow Creek. When the officer demanded to know his permanent place of living, McCandless gave him his parents' Annandale address.     McCandless leaves Westerberg
    Wayne Westerberg, the man Chris had been living with, had been drawn into a scheme to build illegal black boxes. The FBI became aware of this and arrested him. Because Westerberg was in jail, there was no work at the grain elevator for McCandless.   • McCandles paddles through Mexico

    McCandles paddles through Mexico
    By early December, McCandless reached the Morelos Dam and the Mexican border. Worried that he would be denied entry because he was not carrying identification, he sneaked into Mexico by paddling through the dam's open floodgates. However, once he entered the dam he came in contact with a maze of irrigation canals, marshland, and dead-end channels.   • McCandless almost dies

    McCandless almost dies
    After traveling south, McCandless beached the canoe on a sandbar far from shore to observe the powerful tides. About an hour later McCandless faced violent winds that began blowing from the dessert, and the wind and tidal rips carried him out to sea. The water almost capsize his small canoe. Finally, he manages to beach the canoe on a jetty and survives.     McCandless spends a night in prison
    In mid-January, McCandless was back at the United States border. However, he tried to slip back into the country without an ID, and was caught by immigration authorities. He was taken to prison, but concocted a clever story that released him.     Jim Gallien spotted Chris McCandless hitchhiking and picked him up. McCandless tells Gallien his name is Alex Supertramp and asked him to take him as far as the edge of Denali National Park.     3 hunters, Ken Thompson, Gordon Samel, and Ferdie Swanson, arrived at the bus in the late afternoon, and saw a frightened couple standing next to it. They all examined the note taped to the window, then Samel went inside to bus to take a look.
