    Plessy vs Ferguson
    The Supreme Court had ruled that such segregation, like the seperation of whites and blacks, was constitutional as long as the facilities for blacks and whites were "seperate but equal." This rarely happened though, the majority of facilities for African Americans were rarely equal. Laws such as the are know as de jure segregation.

    CORE Congress of Racial Equality was founded in 1942 in Chicago Il. CORE is the third oldest and one of the ‘Big Four’ civil rights groups in the United States. CORE's main goal is to bring equality regardless of race. Through out the years CORE has been involeved in many events to support civil rights, from the freedom rides to the March on Washignton.

    .Jackie Robinson was the first African American to be excepted into the Major leauges. Branch Rickey manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, took in Jackie not only for his skill, but for his demeanor. Being introduced into the major leagues Jackie had to deal with teammates and crowds who did not respect his presence. Jackie even had threats to his family but handled them with greatness. Jackie led the Dodgers to six pennants in his ten seasons with the major leauges.

Man was offered enrollement into another law school established by the State for Negroes, he declined and took this to court. Even though his case could have been won and he be excepted into the University of Texas. The court reversed it saying he would have equal education at the State for Negroes college. Denying him entry into the University of Texas.

    aye The court case that decided the "seperate but equal" public schools for blacks and whites was unconstitutional. Opening actual equal education for everyone. Was this case that opened lots of other doors for civil rights and this great movement.

    This event is what started the bus boycotting of this time. Starting with Rosa Parks refusing to give her seat up to a white man. Who was then arrested on these counts and fined 10 dollars. Thus begining the bus boycotting.

    whiteHoward Smith proposed this during a speech as an attack agaisnt the Brown vs Board of Education case, and the desegregation of schools. Was signed by 82 representatives and 19 senators. which most were from the states that were part of the Confederacy.

    The Southern Christian Leadership Conference was created from the start of Rosa parks denial of giving her seat up to a white man. Founded by David Abernathy, they issued a document declaring that civil rights are essential to democracy, that segregation must end, and that all black people should reject segregation absolutely and nonviolently.

    Nine African American students colunteered to enroll into Little Rock. The Governor Orval Faubus would not allow this and called the Arkansas state National Guard. When the nine students arrived at school the soldiers blocked their way. In doing this President Eisenhower saw how serious the situation was and sent federal troops to protect the students and enforce the Court's decision.

    Joseph McNeil, Franklin McCain, Ezell Blair, Jr. and David Richmond were the four men that began this whole movement. First starting out in their college dorm rooms. The boys soon realized they needed to start taking action. The first day the boys went to F.W. Woolworth store and bought many things from multiple counters. Then sitting at the whites only area they ordered coffee, were refused service and asked to leave. This was the start of all the major sit-ins around the nation.

    youth This group was formed mostly by the youth of the civil rights movement. The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee even worked beside The Southern Christian Leadership Conference. THE SNCC was the group behind the freedom rides, and showed the full determination of the black youths.

    This was an interacial group of activist led by the CORE. This organized rides were to test the enfourcement of the Supreme Court's decision in the Morgan vs the CommonWealth of Virginia. On these rides, things wouldnt go so well sometimes. White rascist would attack the young activist, injuring them severely sometimes. While the activist were arrested even though they dindu nuffin. This would not slow the young people, as they would regroup and finsih their journey.

    james James was the first african american to attend the University of Mississippi. This took the help of 127 marshals, and even President Kennedy. The Governer of Mississippi was agaisnt the desegragation of the south. Saying he would not allow this to happen as long as he was governer.

    Over two hundred thousand protesters met in Washington D.C. The main events took place at the Lincoln Memorial where speakers addressed the crowd. The highlight of the day was King's "I have a dream" speech where he spoke of a colorblind society "when all God's children" would be free and equal.

    A bombing occurred at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham. The church had been the SCLC's headquarters earlier that spring. Four African American girls were killed.

    One thousand white and black volunteers traveled to Mississippi to educate African Americans and help them to become registered votrers.They also formed the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party(MFDP).
  • Civil Rights Act

    Civil Rights Act
    The Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned segreagtion in public accomodations, and gave the government the ability to compel school boards into desegregating their schools. It also granted the Justice Department the ability to prosecute individuals who violate people's civil rights. It also banned descrimination in the workplace on account of race, sex, color, or national origin. The act also established the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission(EEOC).
  • Malcom X Assassination

    Malcom X was assassinated while giving a speech at a rally in New York City.
  • Selma

    Martin Luther King Jr. and the SCLC organized a series of protests in Selma, Alabama to pressure the government to pass a voting rights act. On March 7, the were caught in a confrontation with police. Armed state troopers and other authorities attacked the marchers as they attempted to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge. This event became known as "Bloody Sunday".

    The Voting Rights Act of 1965 banned literacy test and gave the federal government power to oversee voter registrations and elections in states that had descriminated against minorities.

    King was shot while standing on his motel balcony. He died shortly later at the hospital. He was thirty-nine years old. James Earl Ray was , a white ex-convict was charged with his murder.
