  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Separate but equal schools are decided to be unequal. Segregation in schools in removed.
  • Emmett Till

    14 year old boy Emmett Till is killed for allegedly whistling at a white woman
  • Rosa Parks

    Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white passenger which in turn sparked the Montgomery bus boycott.
  • James Meredith

    James Meredith was the first African-American student to enroll at the University of Mississippi. This led to violence and riots. President Kennedy sent 5,000 federal troops to help dissolve the matter.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. jailed

    MLK Jr. was jailed during anti segregation protests in Birmingham, Alabama.
  • The march on Washington

    About 200,000 people join the march on Washington. Congregating at the Lincoln memorial to hear MLK Jr's famous "I have a dream" speech.
