    Benjamin Mays elected president of Morehouse College
    Best known for his role as a mentor of King. He was a leading advocate of civil rights before and after the modern civil rights movement.Mays became president of Morehouse College and he strenghted the schools academic rigor.
  • 1946 Governors Race

    1946 Governors Race
    After 1946 elections, three men claimed the governors office after Eugene Talmadge was elected for his fourth term and died before taking office. This led to the three governors controversy.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    In the ruling, the court said seperate but equal schools were unconstitutional, in response to the 1896 decision in Plessy v. Ferguson that legalized the seperate but equal doctrine. It made seperate but equal facilities illegal.
  • 1956 State Flag

    1956 State Flag
    After the Brown vs Board incident, the flag was changed to include the confederate flag. Its been adopted by hate groups such as the KKK because it was thought to be offensive.

    The Sibley Commission was a group created to travel to districts to hear the voice of Georgians whether or not to close public schools or integrate schools.

    Student Nonviolence Coordinating Committee
    A non violent student group founded by MLK to promote civil rights. It adopted greater militancy late in the decade, reflecting nationwide trends in black activism.
  • Hamilton Holmes & Charlayne Hunter

    Hamilton Holmes & Charlayne Hunter
    Holmes and Hunter applied for college but were not accepted by the University of Georgia based on their race. They took their case to court and won. They were the first African American male and female to be admitted to UGA.
  • Albany Movement

    Albany Movement
    Civil rights leaders in southern cities sought to challenge segregation laws in Albany, Georgia. King viewed the movement as a failed attempt but after King left the city, black voter registration let to a run-off election for an African American nominee for a county commission seat.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights leader, led the March on Washington to protest racial discrimination and to show support for major civil rights legislation that was pending in congress. King was known for his non-violent protests and the March on Washington was one of them.
  • Civil Rights Act/Voting Rights Act

    Civil Rights Act/Voting Rights Act
    JFK passed a law that made segregation of all public facilities illegal. It prohibited discrimination in businesses and labor unions. The march to the Alabama State capitol influenced congress to pass the voting rights act of 1965. White primarys was strong before these acts were passed. White primarys were used by southern whites to keep African Americans from voting in the Democratic Primary.

    Lester Maddox elected as governor
    Lester Maddox was a restaurant owner who was a segregationist. But he appointed more African Americans to government postions than all prior Georgia governors combined.
  • Maynard Jackson elected Mayor

    Maynard Jackson elected Mayor
    Maynard Jackson expanded Hartsfield-Jackson international airport. When he was elected mayor, he added more black officers to the city. He worked closely with Andrew Young and Billy Paine to bring the olympics to the city.
  • Andrew Young elected Mayor of Georgia

    Andrew Young elected Mayor of Georgia
    He was key to bringing the 1996 olympics to Georgia. Young became active in the civil rights movement. He worked for the SCLC and trained civil rights volunteers in taking part in non-violent protests.
