  • The Montgomery Bus Boycott

    The Montgomery Bus Boycott
    The boycott was an organized boycott held in Montgomery Alabama, led by Martin Luther King Jr. It was held to end the segrigation of busses. Rosa Parks a black woman sat in the white section of the bus and refussed to give up her seat to a white man. The boycott was held to show support to Parks which became a huge sucess. On November 13th, 1956, busses we now intergrated.
  • The Little Rock 9

    The Little Rock 9
    The Little Rock 9 were a group of black students who won a court order to attend Central High in Little Rock, Arkansas that holds 2000 white students. The governor of Arkansas, Orval Faubus, ordered National Guard to block the entrance of the school. Even after Eisenhower got involved sending more troops to defend the Little Rock 9, Faubus still insisted on segrigation. He then ordered 3 public schools to be shit down. Onlu until 1959, did steps to intergrated schools start.

    Civil Rights Act of 1957
    The act was inacted to protect the rights for blacks to vote. Eisenhower stongly believed in the right to vote. In 1956 he sent the bill to Congress hoping not to split the Demicratic party. Even though some Southerner Congressmen tried to overule the bill, Senitor LBJ put together a compromise making the bill be passed. Even though it wasn't as strong as it first was, anyone interfering with the right to vote with be taken with leagal action.
  • The Sit-In Movement

    The Sit-In Movement
    On Feb. 1st, A few black friends were refused survice and then sat there until closing time, announcing that they will sit at the counter until they were provided survice just like the white customers, soon thousands followed. In about 2 months, segregated resturants, hotels and more, sit-ins were being held in 9 states. The NAACP and the SCLA were nerves because they didnt think these students were "trained" to not be non-violent. In morst accounts they proved them wrong.
  • The Freedom Riders

    The Freedom Riders
    A team of African Americana and white volentees called upon by CORE leader James Farmer were asked to travel to the South to draw attention to the desegrigation of bus terminals. They were attacked by a white angry mob in Birmingham, and Montgomery Alabama. The mob attacked the bus by slashing tires and threw rocks at the window, they also beat the Freedom Riders bloody. The attack made national news and JFK felt like he needed to get the violence under control.
  • James Meredith and the Desegregation of the University of Mississippi

    James Meredith and the Desegregation of the University of Mississippi
    James Meredith was an African American veterian in the air force and applied to transfered to the University of Mississippi and was denyed the right. The governor of Mississippi, Ross Barnett was the reason for that ruling. President JFK sent 500 marshals to escort James Meredith. An angry white mob attacked the campus throwing rocks, bottles, bricks and even acid at the marshals. Meridith athen attended the school after 160 marshals were wounded and He was present under federal guard.
