    Benjamin Mays was best known for his role in the progression of political rights of African Americans in America and in the advancement of civil rights. Also, Mays was a signifigant mentor to civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
  • The election of 1946 and the "3 Governors Controversy"

    The election of 1946 and the "3 Governors Controversy"
    This was the year that Eugene Talmadge dies and sparks the "3 Governors of Controversy". The election of Talmadges son, Herman Talmadge, created some problems. So, this controversy led to many politics and the involment of the Georgia Supreme Court to settle the issue.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    This act 's decision was to establish separate public schools for blacks and whites. The reaction was ruled a violation of the 14th amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The Sibley Commission first asked people and schools around how they felt about this, then later became more harsh and gave schools a choice to either integrate or close your doors.

    The state flag was replaced in 1955 becasue the new state flag was based off of the 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education. This new flag gave the interpretation of integregation of public schools (massive resistance". The GA state motto os "Wisdom, Justice, Moderation".

    Formation of SNCC and the integregation of the Woolworth's lunch counter
    SNCC= Student Nonviolent Coordinationg Committee. This committee was part of the Civil rights Movement in the 1960s and it organized voter registration drives all over the south. Also, the integregation of Woolworth's lunch conter included four college students asking politely for service, but when refused and asked to leave, they remained in their seats.

    Admission of Charlayne Hunter and Hamiltion Holmes to UGA
    Holmes and Hunter became the first two African American students admitted to UGA. Since thes two wanted to join the university, there was a huge riot that had the police involved very quick. Because of the riot, there were various opinions on integregation.
  • Albany Movement

    Albany Movement
    Cause: In November of 1961, the SNCC encouraged students to protest about segregation and disenfranchisement. Effect: As a result, Albany's bus was targeted and hundreds were arrested. Martin Luther King Jr. believed that this act of the authoritys was wrong and joined in to a protest march.

    March on Washington
    The March on Washington demanded civil and economic rights for African Americans. Included in this event, Martin Luther King Jr. stood in front of the Lincoln Memorial delivering his famous "I have a dream" speech which he called an end to racism.

    This act ended unequal application of voter registration requirments and racial segregation in school. This also guaranteed all citizins equal protection of the laws under the 14th nd 15th amendments.

    This act is a piece of federal legislation in the U.S. that prohibits racial discrimination in voting. THis law was signed by Lyndon B. Johnson on Aug. 6,1965.
  • Lester Maddox

    Lester Maddox
    Lester Maddox was an AMerican politician who served as the 75th governor of GA. Maddox was known as a staunch segregationist, when he refused to serve black customers in his ATL restaurant. Later, he served as a Lieutenant Governor under Jimmy Carter.
  • Election of Maynard Jackson as mayor of Atlanta

    Election of Maynard Jackson as mayor of Atlanta
    Maynard Jackson was the first African American to serve as mayor of a major southern city. He served eight years then returned for a third in 1990, following the mayorship of ANdrew Young. Andrew Young was interested in politics just like jackson and developed ATL's reputation as an international city.
