    Eugene Thomas was about to be the govenor but died before his inauguration.Eugene's son Herman was about to be govenor, but Melvin Thompson was lieutenant govenor and wanted to be govenor. Then there was another election and Herman Talmadge won.

    The US Supreme Court ruled that state laws establishing seperate schools for blacks and whites was unconstitional. Later segregation was ruled a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth amendment of the US constitution. The decision was to integrate schools. The Sibley commission recommended that the state accept the federal decision to desegregate the schools.

The Albany Movement was mobilized thousands of citizens and attracted nationwide attention. The movement failed to accomplish its goals because of a determermined opposition.

    As a young lawyer Maynard Jackson won election as vice-mayor of Atlanta in 1969. 4 years later Atlanta voters elected him as mayor. Therefore making him the first african american to head a major southern city.
