    Rosa Parks
    Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on the bus to a white person. Even though she was arrested she caused the successful bus boycott
  • Brown vs BOE

    Brown vs BOE
    Supreme Court outlaws segregated in schools. The Brown's child weren't allowed in their local school in Topeka Kansas so they sued the school. The court ruling completely changed the Plessey vs Ferguson case and outlawed segregation.
  • Boycott

    The Montgomery bus boycott had begun which led to complete desegregation on busses.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1957

    Civil Rights Act of 1957
    Congress passed the first civil rights act since reconstruction. It added a civil rights section of the justice dpt. and it gave court prosecutors the ability to obtain court injunctions to help fight for the right to vote.

    A group of nine African American students were integrated into a whit e school, but on their way in they were blocked by state troops and a riot to not let them in. They were finally escorted in by federal paratroopers that were sent by the president

    Freedom Riders
    The freedom riders rode buses to protest segregation. Organizations like core and the NAACP were supporting them. Both withes and blacks were in on it.

    A voter registration worker was killed by a white legislator in Mississippi
  • James Meredith

    James Meredith
    James Meredith tried to enroll at Ole Miss college. There were troops sent by the governor and a riot trying to block his entrance. He was finally allowed in when JFK sent troops to protect and escort him in.
  • Medgar Evers Assainated

    Medgar Evers Assainated
    Medgar was the first field secretary of the NAACP, but he was shot in the back in the driveway of his home.
  • The March on Washington

    The March on Washington
    The march was a way to lobby congress and build support for civil rights. It was the march that the famous "I Have Dream" speech was spoken which built momentum for the civil rights bill.
  • BOMBING

    School girls were killed in the bombing of sixteenth street Baptist church.
  • The Civil rights of 1964

    The Civil rights  of 1964
    President Johnson signed this bill which gave the federal government power to fight against discrimination, made segregation illegal/equal access gave the attorney general more power to give lawsuits to force desegregation, ended discrimination in the workplace, and founded the EEOC.
  • The March on Selma

    The March on Selma
    Selma was chosen as the place for the marching because only 3% of the votes registered were from black voters and Jim Clark and his posse were beating and oppressing African Americans including marchers. 2000 blacks and marchers were arrested and many other were beaten. This infuriated Johnson making him want a new voting rights law.
  • Thurgood Marshall

    Thurgood Marshall
    Marshall was a lawyer who represented NAACP in the Brown vs. BOE case. After the case Johnson elected him as a supreme court justice. This was monumental because more and more government spots have been desegregated.

    MLK was shot on a hotel balcony in Memphis Tennessee by a sniper. His death caused riots in cities which effected both races.
