    A little over a month after Viginia decides to secede from the union, Arkansas, Tennesee, and North Carolina also secede from the Union. Forming a seperate confederacy consisting of eleven states, nine million people, four million of those are slaves

    Along the Tennessee RIver, general Ulysses S. Grant's troop were attacked by the confederate troop. Because general Grant was unprepared for this attack, he lost 13,000 of his men. Lincoln refused to relieve Grant.

    General Robert E. Lee and the confederae armies are topped in Maryland by McClellan very large Union forces. By nightfall, 26,000 men are either dead, wounded or missing, making this the bloodiest day ever in U.S. military history. General Robert E. Lee then retreats to Virginia.

    The Emancipation Proclamation was issued to free all slaves. This was important because it was saying that blacks and whites were now equal.

    President Lincoln issues the final Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves held by Confederates. He also emphasizes the enlisting of blacks into the army.

    The Union army is defeated by Lee because of his daring tatics. General Jackson is mortally injured by his own soldiers. Union losses are 17,000 killed, wounded or misssing and confederate losses are 13,000.
