    Missouri compromise
    It was an effort to calm down rivals triggered by the request of Missouri in 1819 In an effort to preserve the balance of power in Congress between slave and free states, the Missouri Compromise was passed in 1820 admitting Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state.

  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    The Dred Scott case was a court case in 1857 that decided the fate of Dred Scott, who was a slave who thought he had the right to be free, because he was brought to Illinois where slavery is illegal. Because slaves were considered property, and the government can't take your property, the United States government could not grant him his freedom. This resulted in a loophole causing no consequences to owning slaves.

  • John Brown's Raid

    John Brown's Raid
    John Browns raid occurred on October 16th 1859. He and his group of abolitionists marched into Harpers Ferry to protest against slavery, and took over a local arsenal. The raid killed five people. John Brown was killed, but his spirit lived on and a song wrote about him was the marching tune for the north during the Civil War.

    The Election of 1860 was the election in which the republican candidate, Abraham Lincoln, won against Stephen Douglas, John Bell, and John Breckinridge. The south feared the outcome of this election because it would mean having an anti slavery president.
