The commander of Fort Sumter refused And on April 12 they open fired. On April 13, Anderson surrendered the fort. This was the opening to the civil war,

Even though the union forces were not prepared they still held their own until the arrival of General Buell's army at Pitsburg Landing. On April 7, 1862 Grant's army made the confederates retreat.

    Union General William T. Sherman went to Chatanooga, Tennessee to fight again the confederate army under the control of Joesph E. Johnson. Sherman flanked the confederates and besieged Atlanta by the end oof July. Johnson was relieved of command and replaced by John B. Hood.

    It was ratified by the states on December 6, 1865. It was accepted in congress in January. The purpose of this ammendment was formally abolishing slavery.
