Civil War Battles

  • First Battle of Bull Run

    The South was able to capture Fort Sumter from the Government. Both sides realized that this will be a long war.
  • Shiloh

    A lot of soldiers died. The Union general was criticized for not expecting the Confederate attack, but the Union was able to secure some of the waterways in the west. The Confederates got the message that this is going to be a long War.
  • Battle of the Ironclads

    This was the first sea battle. The Confederates made their own navy ship. This battle was a draw.
  • Battle of Malvern Hill

    The Union occupied Malvern Hill, VA. The south tried to attack but they had a poor plan and sections (of the south) attacked at different times and was beaten by the north and then they fled.
  • Second Manassas (Second Battle of Bull Run)

    While the North and the South were fighting, an other group of soldiers from the South attacked the Union Army on the other side. The North was able to escape. While the North was retreating the South was able to go into the northern lands.
  • Battle of Glendale

    The South wanted to attack the North at Glendale and the north did not fight well because the general was not leading the army so the different groups did not work together. However, because of the poor communication and performance of the South, the North was able to retreat. The South lost it's chance of capturing the Union Army.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    The South attacked the North resulting in a bloody 3 day battle. The North won and he south lost a lot of men.
  • Battle of Chickamauga

    The North was able to drive the South out of Chattanooga. Soon after, the South came to Chickamauga (with more men) in hopes to reoccupy Chattanooga. The South was able to win, because most of the Union army fled.
  • Lincoln's Reelection

    Lincoln got reelected, which meant the war will continue until the North won.
  • Battle of Cold Harbor

    The North wanted to capture Old Cold Harbor. The south left the Crossroads (At Old Cold Harbor) and build defensive trenches. There was a delay in reinforcements because of bad roads and confusing orders. Because of this, the south was able to build even more trenches. When the North attacked at night, the trenches were hidden causing the north to lose a lot of men.
  • Hampton Road Conference

    The South requested peace negotiations because they were losing money, which Lincoln agreed to but no agreement was made, because Lincoln wanted unconditional surrender.
  • Union Victory

    The South Surrendered and the war ended
