    Events That Caused Civil War

  • Cotton Gin

    Cotton Gin
The creation of the cotton gin increased slavery in a time where it seemed to be finally slowing down. This product made the south happy production wise and incouraged them to buy and own more slaves whereas it made the North upset because they were hoping to finally see an end come to slavery. This increased sectionalism showing a divide between the want of an end to slavery and the need for it. This also influenced secession because it again showed the norths want for an end to slavery.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
The missouri compromise is a compromise which admits maine as a free state and allows Missouri to become a slave state. The compromise creates the 30 36 line and creates sectionalism by putting a literal divide between free states and slave states. This impacted secession because the literal divide made the two groups feel seperate in the union.
  • Tariff of 1832

    Tariff of 1832
The tariff or 1832 led to the nullification crisis which showed intense sectionalism. On one side the North was trying to impose protective tariffs in order to protect their industry however the south felt that these tariffs favored the North at the exspense of southern farmers. This impacted secession because it made the south feel that the North was being favored industrial wise and that they had to take the bad side of the deal.
  • Compromise of 1850

A compromise which included 5 bills that helped limit tension between the south and north for a short time. This helped postpon secession in that the compromise favored both sides in different ways. It still has an impact on sectionalism in the idea that it does not bring the two sides together and still allows the two sides to view each other as seperate.
  • Underground Railroad and Fugitive Slaves

    Underground Railroad and Fugitive Slaves
The underground railroad made southern slave owners angry for obvious reasons. Slaves escaping to the North meant Southern owners were losing their property. This created sectionalism because the south was angry that the north had been helping slaves escape and that there was no real punishment for those who helped. This aids in the want of secession.
  • Uncle Toms Cabin

    Uncle Toms Cabin
An anti slavery book which was viewed by the south almost like propaganda for the North. Creates sectionalism becasue the south feels the need to ban these kinds of literature due to the fact that they oppose slavery. Aids to secession because it shows the North actively trying to convince people that slavery is an evil institution.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
Lincoln becomes president although the majority of the union does not want him. He is a republican who is pro tariff and pro limitation of the expansion of slavery which are both very strong Northern ideas. Creates sectionalism because North now has a president on their side whereas the South views Lincoln as a man who is going to end slavery. Lincolns election leads to secession because the south believes he is going to end slavery.
