California admitted as a free state. Citizens were to apprehend runaway slaves. -
Dred Scott Case
A slave wanted to be free because was living in a free state with is own and feel he should be free. Chief Justice Roger Said " slaves were private property and thus no decision (rights) needs to be made". -
First Bull Run
The Union was winning until Thomas "stone wall" Jackson's Virginian's made a stand. It was the first major battle of the war. -
Antietam
12,000 soldiers were killed in the first 3 hours. The north and south fought but no one really won. -
Battle of fredericksburg
Burnside attacked Lee and the Union loses 13,000 while CSA only lost 5,000. Burnside got fired after this battle. -
Emanncipation proclamation
Frees all enslaved people in rebellious states. It also keeps foreigners from helping CSA. -
Chancellorsville
Lee split his army into two different groups and attacked the north on both sides. This was Lee's greatest victory but his greatest lost because Jackson got shot and dies from it. -
Gettysburg
It was a three day battle that killed nearly 50,000. It was the first major victory for the north. This is when the North knew they were going to win. -
vicksburg
It cuts the south in half. The Union weakened the south by trapping the so they couldn't get food. -
Atlanta
The north burned most of Atlanta. This is when the south realized the war needs to end. -
Black Codes
Laws limiting 4 million former slaves. That means they are not getting right even though they are citizens. -
13 Amendment
This was the Amendment that abolished slavery. It made it so slaves are now citizens. -
Appomattox Court House
Lee surrenders to Grant at the Appomattox court house. It was the fastest compromise for ending the war. -
Lincoln's Death
Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth. This changed the reconstruction plans. -
14th Amendment
All people born in the US are now citizens. It prevents former CSA from holding political office.
