    Abraham Lincoln

    Lincoln had many major accomplishments. He had signed the Homesteads Act where poor people were able to obtain land. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation which led to the abolishment of slavery in the US. One other is where he led the Union to victory in the American Civil War.
  • Missouri Compomise

    The Missouri Compromise created an imbalance between the number of pro/anti slavery states until until the admission of Maine as an anti-slavery state. After becoming a pro-slavery state, it allowed for an imaginary line to be drawn dividing the former Louisiana Territory into pro and anti-slavery divisions. This was ended after the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854.
  • Compromise of 1850

    In the Mexican-American War, it was resolved by the Compromise of 1850. This compromise brought California as a free state, Utah and New Mexico territories were created with slavery being determined by popular sovereignty, the Texas and New Mexico boundaries were settled, slave trade was ended in Washington D.C., and southerners could easily recover fugitive slaves. This was because congressmen voting on the proposals and they all passed, now Congress won’t have slavery issues for several years.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act was one of the most significant events leading to the Civil War. Settlers wanted to move into Nebraska because of slavery being outlawed. Settlers could not move there because it was a territory so Congress was hurrying to permit a Nebraska territory. It was made into a territory because it needed support of slavery and they get the support from Nebraska.
  • Election of 1860

    The election of 1860 was for the democrats to meet in South Carolina to select the candidate they want for President. Instead of it being more of an election, it was a disaster because the northern and southern Democrats were fighting over Douglas being President. The northern were for Douglas because they were against slavery and the southern was against Douglas because they were for slavery.
  • Battle of Antietam

    In the Battle of Antietam, McClellan’s army failed to defeat the other army but he was able to advance ahead. The army was able to have a couple of more defeats before the war came to the end. Even though they had a loss, this gave Lincoln political cover for the Emancipation Proclamation.

    Emancipation Proclamation

    It was during the American Civil War whenever this come. The Emancipation Proclamation was made by Lincoln and for the abolition of slavery. Before, Lincoln didn’t think that the northerners would go for the abolition of slavery so instead this was supposed to be for the preservation of the Union instead. It became the abolition of slavery because the slaves fleeing to join the invading northern armies.
