    Abraham Lincoln gets elected
    In 1858 he went up against Senator Stephen Douglas in a contest for the U.S. senate. Douglas won but how he handled the contest debates landed him in the 1860 presidential election. Abraham Lincoln spent six weeks traveling and speaking up north. He won over the republican party for his election, and eventually became elected president of the U.S.
  • Texas leaves the nation

    Texas leaves the nation
    States took sides based on how the state handled slavery, states laws, and other government issues. The states that supported slavery, believed that each state should handle things by themselves, and supported the democratic party, were known as the south. When Abe was elected, southerners relized that he was from the south. The south was afraid that he would abolish slavery and make the republican party larger so the south left the union and was called The Confederate States of America.
  • Houston Was kicked out of Office

    Houston Was kicked out of Office
    After Texas was annexed Houston was a U.S. senator. While he was a U.S. senator, he decided to run for govenor. He eared his spot and tried to keep Texas from seceding from the U.S. Texas did secede and Houston was thrown ot of office because he did not pledge allegence to the Confederate States of America. Houston later died on July 26th, 1863. He was the only person to be thrown out of office in two seperate states.
  • Battle at Fort Sumter

    Battle at Fort Sumter
    Gen. Beauregard demanded the surrender of Fort Sumter. Anderson refused and held on. On April 12, 1861, Confederates open fired on the Fort. Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter and evacuated. This was the battle that satrted the American Civil War. One Union artillerist was killed and three wounded.
  • Battle of Galveston

    Battle of Galveston
    Commander Jonathan M. Wainwright took possession of Galveston and raised the U.S. flag over the city. Confederate forces under the command of John Bankhead Magruder launched a bold attack to recapture the city. The attack ended with an almost complete Confederate victory.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg
    On July 1, Confederate forces converged on the town from west and north. On July 2, The North attacked most of Gettysburgs main features. By evening, the Federals claimed Little Round Top. On July 3, they had their last battle on Culp's hill and Cemetery Ridge. The confederate army had won a great victory, and they now had the city under their control.
  • Battle of Sabine Pass

    Battle of Sabine Pass
    The Battle of Sabine Pass was a land and sea battle. Lincoln decided to create a major blockade to stop trade. The Union gunboats made their way through Sabine pass, while confederalist sharp shooters watched the six major cannons. As the gunboats where moving, they had to deal with the cannons and the sharpshooters. In the end, Conferderalists took their victory, taking with them 300 Union soilders.

    At this time, Nathanial P. Banks (U.S.) led his army up the river about 150 miles. E. Kirby Smith,established a defensive position just below Mansfield. On April 8, Banks’s men approached. For the rest of the morning, the Federals probed the Rebel lines. Taylor's attack (C.S.) at 6:00pm haulted after about an hour of fighting. Banks and his army withdrew but met Taylor again on the 9th of April at Pleasant Hill. This is where the Confederates won their victory.

    After all of the Battles it was the north that won the majority of the battles and under that rule, slavery would no longer be in the U.S.. New trade and labor ideas would be released and used in the U.S. and C.S.. By 1870 all of the south had been back in the U.S. and all blacks had a voice in the government. And new laws have been put againts racial discrimination.

    Battle at Palmito Ranch
    More than a month after the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee, the last battle took place at Palmito Ranch in Texas. Theodore H. Barrett commanded an expedition of 250 men to Texas. They started out towards Palmito Ranch. At Palmito Ranch, they destroyed the Supplies.Barrett led his force back the Rio Grande where the men could rest.At 4:00 pm, a large Confederate cavalry force, commanded by Col. John S. “Rip” Ford, approached. This was a Confederate victory.
  • Juneteenth

    On June 19, 1865, Union general Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and issued General Order Number 3, "The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor." This let all the slaves free, with equal rights.
  • Reconstruction Ends

    Reconstruction was when the government tried to fix things like slavery, men and women's rights, and tieing the country back together. All of these things ordered themselves out after the American Civil War. The release of slaves was on June 19, 1865, later known as Juneteenth. The two countries were forced back together and now became the United States of America. And westward expansion became more popular, and new boundaries were drawn.
