    During the 1860 election Abraham Lincoln faced Stephen Douglas as well as John C. Breckinridge and John Bell. Out of the men Lincoln won the election. Lincoln's election lead to many of the Southern states secession. By the time of Lincoln's inauguration seven states has seceded and the Confederate States of America had been established.

    Texas, like many other states, seceded from the Union. Texas was the seventh state to secede from the Union. Texas seceded after Lincoln's election. Texas seceded when a state convention voted 166 to 8 in favor of secession.

    Houston tried to convince Texas not to secede. He failed, and Texas did secede. Soon after Houston was kicked out of office. He was kicked out of office because he refused to pledge allegence to the Confederate States of America, which Texas had become apart of.
  • Battle at Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter is where the first shots of the Civil war were fired. When Abraham Lincoln announced plans to resupply the fort, Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard bombarded the fort. After a 34-hour fire exchange, Anderson and 86 soldiers surrendered the fort. The Confederate troops occupied Fort Sumter for nearly Four years afterward.

    The Union created a blockade on the Texas coast and held possesion of one of Texas's most important harbors, Galveston. The confederates lead an attack on the Union to reclaim Galveston January 1, 1863. They used cottonclads and attacked from the rear. The Confederates were succesful in reclaiming Galveston, and kept calim of it for the rest of the war.

    Battle of Gettysburg was the largest battle of the Civil War, it also had the most casualties. On the Union side there were 23,055 casualties. On the Confederate side there were 23,231 casualties. The battle lasted three days and ended on July 3, 1863. The battle's end resulted in a Union victory.
  • Battle of Sabine pass

    Battle of Sabine pass
    Four Union ships traveled into the Sabine River and tried to capture Fort Griffin. There were only 44 Confederate soldiers inside at the time, they were there as a punishment. As a way to pass the time they had been practicing firing artillery at markers placed in the river. This turned out good for them when the Union attacked. The men forced the Union to surrender and captured one of the ships along with about 200 prisoners.

    The Red River Campaign was a series of battles. The Campaign included the largest army/navy operation of the Civil War. This was also the last confederate victory of the war. The Red River Campaign was fought from March 10 to May 22 1864.

    The civil war began in April 12, 1861 and ended on April 9, 1865. The Civil War was fought between the North and South and lasted four years. Many casualties were lost on both sides. About 620,000 men were lost in total.

    The Battle of Palmito Ranch was fought on the banks of the Rio Grande, only a few miles away from the port of Los Brazos de Santiago. The Union and Confederate troops had been abiding by an unofficial truce. Until Col. Theodore H. Barrett sent men to go attack a group of rebels. Branson and his forces surrounded the rebels outpost at White's Ranch but found no one there. Brandon led his men to go attack a Confederate camp.
  • Juneteenth

    Juneteenth is also known as Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day, or Emancipation Day. Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas. Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19.
  • Reconstruction Ends

    The reconstruction of the South began after the Civil War. Slavery had been abolished in the South. Now that the Civil War was over blacks were given voting rights.
