    Election of Lincon
    Abraham Lincon was elected as the 16th president of the United States. His competitor William H. Steward's popularity actually worked against him and had critisism before the voting even started. Lincons precedency gave him powernover the union army in which he could make key dissisions and appoint leaders. He also wrote the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 that declaired all slaves in confederate staes to be free.
  • TX Secedes from Union

    TX Secedes from Union
    South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia,
    Louisiana, and Texas all voted to withdraw from the United
    States and form the Confederacy. They elected Jefferson
    Davis as the president.President Lincoln wanted to keep the Union together.The Confederate government wanted control of Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Lincoln refused to give it up.The Confederates shot at the fort until the soldiers inside
    surrendered. Arkansaw, North Carolina, Tenesse, and Virgina all joined the confederacy.

    After Texas was annexed to the United States, Sam served a Senator from Texas. During this Houston decided to run for governor. He won and tried to keep Texas from seceding from the Union. He failed, and then when Texas seceded, Houston was thrown out of office because he refused to pledge allegence to the Confederate States of America.

    Battle of Fort Sumter
    The battle of Fort Sumter was important to the Civil war because it started the war. General Beauregard sent a message to General Anderson awrning him tha they would open fire with in an hours time. The Fort was on fire and General Anderson had no more food or supplies. The fighting continued but the confederets did not stop firing until the next day. The next day the Confederates gained controll and Anderson Surrenderd.
  • Battle of Galveston

    Battle of Galveston
    Sessestion gained popularity when Lincon was elected in Galveston. The Union navy blocked the port in galveston hoping that the small group of Confederate troops would surrender without a fight. After thr Union allowed the confederate troops to escort all of the citizens out and both sides were suposedto keep their distance. The Union shut down the port of Galveston. This caused the Confederate troops to go and amke a blockaid to stop the union forces from continuing further.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg
    Almost accidentally, Confederate troops discovered Union calvary in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The Confederates attacked, paving the way for the largest battle of the war, lasting three days. The Union Army won the Battle of Gettysburg, destroying Lee's hopes of carrying the fighting further up North.
  • Battle of Sabine Pass

    Battle of Sabine Pass
    Four gunboats and seven troop transports steamed into Sabine Pass and up the Sabine River with the intention of capturing Fort Griffin and landing troops to begin occupying Texas. As the gunboats approached Fort Griffin, they came under fire from six cannons. Fort Griffin’s small force of 44 men, under command of Lt. Richard W. Dowling, forced the Union navy to retire and they captured the gunboat Clifton and about 200 prisoners.

    This battle went from March10-May 22, 1864
    The Red River Campaign or Red River Expedition was comprised of a series of battles fought along the Red River in Louisiana during the American Civil War. The campaign had several strategic goals. The Union hoped to capture everything along the Red River in Louisiana and continue into Texas. Finally, Union officials wanted to capture cotton-producing regions, as cotton was in short supply in the North. the winner of this campaine was the Union.
  • End of Cival War

    After four long years of fighting, the Confederacy was defeated at the total cost of 620,000 Union and Confederate dead. In an event that is generally regarded as marking the end of the Civil War, Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith, commander of Confederate forces west of the Mississippi, signs the surrender terms offered by Union negotiators. With Smith's surrender, the last Confederate army ceased to exist, bringing a formal end to the bloodiest four years in U.S. history.

    Lieutenant Colonel David Branson and some soilders went to the north end of Brazos intending to cross in a steam boat, but the steam boat broke down. Branson then gathered some small boats and sent the supplies and soilders that the men needed. But when the men got the supplies the enemy had already retreated to Palmito Ranch.The men knew there was no way he could reach Palmito Ranch in time to surprise the rebels so they moved inward further to rest.

    Despite having lost the element of surprise, Branson gathered his men and pressed on towards Palmito Ranch. Captain Robinson's force at Palmito Ranch was fairly small due to the fact that much of the Confederate cavalry was spread out trying to find grass for their horses. Despite the warning from the French, he was unable to defend his camp and was forced to retreat. Robinson immediately sent word to Colonel Ford of the loss of Palmito Ranch and the fact that he was badly outnumbered.
  • Juneteenth

    Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.

    Reconstruction Ends
    There was opposition in the South and the North's retreat from its commitment to equality, resulted in the end of Reconstruction. By 1876, the nation was prepared to abandon its commitment to equality for all citizens regardless of race.
