    During the election of 1860, the democratic party was split in half. One half was favoring north views, and the other half favored the south views. Lincoln was the only republican that was running for president, so he won the election.

    Texas was the seventh state to leave the Union. A convention was held in Austin to decide if Texas was going to leave of not.The vote was 166 to 7, so Texas seceded from the Union. Texas seceded even though their governer, Sam Houston, objected. Events before Lincoln getting elected made Texas start to want to secede from the Union, but Lincoln getting elected for president finally made them do it, since they disagreed to Lincoln's ideas.

    When Sam Houston governer of Texas he tried to keep them from seceding from the Union. Sam Houston failed and Texas seceded from the union. Sam Houston was thrown out of office because he refused to pledge alligance to the confederate states of america. Houston didn't want to seceded from the union because he knew they would be fighting a losing battle.

    The Union soldiers were trapped on Conferderate property, at Fort Sumter. The conferderate leader, told the Union soldiers to surrender. Union commander Anderson refused. On April 12, Confederate troops opened started shooting at the fort. On April 13, Major Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter, leaving Fort Sumter the next day. So, the conferderates won.

Confederate forces moved into the city at night. The attack ended with a Confederate victory. Harriet Lane and three Union ships were captured. The Union blockaded Galveston so they could'nt use it as a seaport.

    This battle was one of many attemps by the Union to invade Texas. The Union had already been blockading around the Gulf Coast of Texas, but now they tried to get into Sabine Pass and take it over, and take over Fort Griffin. The Union sent in four gunboats to do the job. The Conferderates had to wait until the Union ships were close enough before firing at them. When they came close enough the Conferderates began firing at the Union ships. They sunk two ships, and the other ships retreated.
