Election of Lincoln
During the election of 1860, the democratic party was split in half. One half was favoring north views, and the other half favored the south views. Lincoln was the only republican that was running for president, so he won the election. -

When the southern states found out about the election results, they were not satisfied, because they disagreed with a lot of Lincoln ideas and prespective of slavery, and they started to leave the United States. The leaving of the southern states became the begging of the civil war. -
Texas secedes from the Union
Texas was the seventh state to leave the Union. A convention was held in Austin to decide if Texas was going to leave of not.The vote was 166 to 7, so Texas seceded from the Union. Texas seceded even though their governer, Sam Houston, objected. Events before Lincoln getting elected made Texas start to want to secede from the Union, but Lincoln getting elected for president finally made them do it, since they disagreed to Lincoln's ideas. -
Houston gets kicked out of office
When Sam Houston governer of Texas he tried to keep them from seceding from the Union. Sam Houston failed and Texas seceded from the union. Sam Houston was thrown out of office because he refused to pledge alligance to the confederate states of america. Houston didn't want to seceded from the union because he knew they would be fighting a losing battle. -
Battle at Fort Sumter
The Union soldiers were trapped on Conferderate property, at Fort Sumter. The conferderate leader, told the Union soldiers to surrender. Union commander Anderson refused. On April 12, Confederate troops opened started shooting at the fort. On April 13, Major Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter, leaving Fort Sumter the next day. So, the conferderates won. -
Battle of Galveston
Confederate forces under the command of John Bankhead Magruder made a attack to recapture the Galveston, their city that had been taken by the Union. Confederate forces moved into the city at night. The attack ended with a Confederate victory. Harriet Lane and three Union ships were captured. The Union blockaded Galveston so they could'nt use it as a seaport. -
Battle of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg was a southern effort to seize northern terriotory. It was the biggest battle durng the Civil War. It had about 75,000 men on the Confederacy side and 85,000 men on the Union side.There was a great northern victory. -

Battle of Sabine Pass
This battle was one of many attemps by the Union to invade Texas. The Union had already been blockading around the Gulf Coast of Texas, but now they tried to get into Sabine Pass and take it over, and take over Fort Griffin. The Union sent in four gunboats to do the job. The Conferderates had to wait until the Union ships were close enough before firing at them. When they came close enough the Conferderates began firing at the Union ships. They sunk two ships, and the other ships retreated. -
Red River Campaign
The failure for the Union Army occurred when General Banks went to the Red River with the goal of capturing Shreveport. There was some battles that were fought along in Lousiana, along the Red RiverThe campaign ended in disaster for Banks and his Department of the Gulf Army. The Red River campaign resulted in Conferderate victory. -
End of Civil War
By the spring of 1865 all the principal Confederate armies surrendered to the Union. Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse. So, this meant that the Union had won the Civil War, and slavery would be abolished from the United States.The long process of rebuilding a united nation free of slavery began. -
Battle of Palmito Ranch
The Battle of Palmito Ranch was fought and won by the Confederates in Texas.This was the last battle in the Civil War, even though the war was technically over. Soldiers of all races were in the fighting, Native-Americans, African-Americans, Hispanic Americans, and white Americans.The Confederates were holding onto the last hope of keeping things the way they wanted it, and the Union was keeping their honor and fighting for the United States. -
Juneteenth
Juneteeth is about celebration of freedom. Juneteenth, or June 19, 1865 is the day when many of slaves in the state of Texas learned that they had been freed. Since the slaves had a very hard life, when they found out they were freed, they rejoyced. There were celebrations that had food, games, and people dance and sang. -
Reconstruction Ends
The reconstruction Era was the time after the Civil War. During this time, people in the United States expericend many politcal, social, and economical changes. Most historians consider it a failure because the South became poverty-stricken. Also, some African-Americans gained a voice in government for the first time in American history
