  • compromise of 1850

the US congress passed 5 separate bills that were thought to get rid of the land/territory dispute between the north and the south, but the south didn't like that it tried to eliminate the south's constitutional rights on owning slaves. creating problems later on...
  • GA platform

The GA platform was a response to the compromise of 1850 from georgia, this statement was created when there was a georgia convention in milledgeville (the capital at the time) Slavery was the biggest issue between the north and south, the compromise of 1850 went against the south's constitutional rights of owning slaves. The south didn't like this, (georgia especially) and that's when the georgia platform was born.
  • Emancipation proclamation

After the union's victory in the battle of Antietam, Abraham Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation which stated that slaves in all ten confederate states were now free. The south did not like this.
The south's agricultural economy would drop because slaves were used to grow crops such as corn, cotton, Tabacco, etc. jobs and debt were a problem for the new freedmen, but that would come later in the reconstruction of the south.

    Gettysburg

General Robert E. Lee led his troops to the small town of Gettysburg Pennsylvania, at which there were only 3,000 union troops, they were being led by union General George G. Meade. More union troops were sent out to battle as the union was facing possible defeat. Confederate troops tried to take over the union's center, General Robert E. Lee and his now small army were crushed by the union and were forced to give up. This battle is seen as one of the most important battles of the civil war.
  • Share cropping

During the reconstruction period, share cropping was a way for freedmen and poor white families to make money, but usually it was just a cycle of debt and poverty. Families and freedmen would make deals and buy land from land owners. Sharecroppers would start in debt and hopefully grow crops to pay off their debts. Sharecroppers had to give more than half of their harvest to the land owner, and keep the rest for themselves to be able to stay in share cropping. This was the cycle of poverty.

    The south's reconstruction plan

The south has lost the civil war, the slaves are free, and the south is a mess. What will the union do? The union decides to start helping the south and its reconstruction period. There is a new president (Andrew Johnson) who is trying to help the new freedmen in living their own lives. He was trying a lenient reconstruction plan, or the presidential plan, but it didn't stop the new southern legislatures from creating the "black codes" which were like restrictions to the 13th amendment.
