  • Lincoln elected to the Presidency

    Lincoln elected to the Presidency
    -His main objective was to avoid war.
    -He addressed seceding states directly and promised not to eliminate slavery where it already existed.
  • Fort Summer

    Fort Summer
    -This battle begun when South Carolina secede from the union and escalated with the formation of the confederate army.
    -General Beauregard had sent a message to Anderson saying how he would shot fires if they didn't surrender.
  • Bull Run

    -This was the first major battle of the Civil War
    -The battle had led both sides realizing that this would be a really long and horrible war
  • Battle of Antietam

    -General Lee and Jefferson Davis thought that a successful invasion to Maryland would finally let France and Great Britain to recognize the confederacy as a nation.
    -The fighting was fierce and this would be one of the most bloodiest day in american history.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    -Lincoln waited till 1863 because he felt like he needed a major victory in order to have full support behind the emancipation
    -This only freed slaves from confederate states that weren't under union control
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    -Robert E. Lee invaded the north and tried to defeat the union army once and for all
    -The Union had around 94,000 soldiers and the Confederates had around 72,000 soldiers
  • Battle of Vicksburg

    Battle of Vicksburg
    -If the north took over Vicksburg, the Confederacy would be cut off from the supply lines coming from the west and rebel states would be isolated from the rest of the south
    -It was a great victory for the union and they ended up having control over the Mississippi river.
  • Gettysburg Address

    -It was a short but profound speech given by Abraham Lincoln
    -The speech was to honor the union dead and to remind people what the purpose of the soldiers sacrifice was.
  • Shermans March To The Sea

    Shermans March To The Sea
    -Before the march General Sherman led 100,000 men to the southern city of Atlanta and ended up defeating General Hood and gained control of the city of Atlanta.
    -This was considered to be a risky march because whatever he decided to do was live off the land
  • Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse

    -The results effectively brought the end to the four year Civil War
    -Since Lees army was trapped, messages were exchanged and Lee and Grant agreed to meet at the courthouse where the Army of Northern Virginia was signed
  • Assassination Of Lincoln

    -When the play he was watching cracked a big joke the audience laughed loudly disturbing Lincoln as John Wilkes entered his booth and shot him in the head
    -Booth was captured and killed as he refused to surrender
