    South Carolina is the first state to secede from the union. Within two months, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas followed.

    A graduate from West Point, and a former army officer, Jeferson Davis is appointed the President for the Confederate States of America.

  • Fort Sumter Attacked

    Fort Sumter Attacked
    Confederates open fire with 50 cannons at the Union base of Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. The civil war has begun. The Condederates occupied Fort Sumter for the next four years, fighting off the Union.

    The biggest war in American history, the Union and the Confederates fought over many issues. The biggest issue was on slavery. At the end of the war the Union was successful, but the impact on the war left a lasting one that Americans will never forget.

    Robert E. Lee, is offered a leading position as the head of the Union Army. Lee was a war hero, a army vertran of over 25 years and a former super intendant at West Point University.
  • Virginia Secedes

    Virginia Secedes
    Virginia secedes from the Union, followed by Arkansas, Tennesse and North Carolina. The eleven states of the confederates are formed. The population of the Confederacy is 9 million ( 5 million free, 4 million slaves)
  • The Anaconda Plan

    The Anaconda Plan
    Proposed by General-in-Chief Winfield Scott, the Anaconda plan said to blockade of the Southern ports, and called for an advance down the Mississippi River to cut the South in two.   • Battle at Bullrun

    Battle at Bullrun
    This is the first battle of the Civil War. Under command of Irvin McDowell, the Union Army faces a loss. The Confederate General ThomasJ. Jackson earns the nickname "Stonewall," becase he held off the union. The union then retreats back to Washington. President Lincoln then realizes how long this war is going to be. In a comment after the battle he says "It's damned bad."
  • International Crisis

    Two Condeferate officials sailing toward England are captured by the U.S Navy. England, demans their release or else they will take the United States to war. Lincoln demands their release by making the remark "One war at a time.."
  • General War Order No. 1

    General War Order No. 1
    Lincoln gives out first general war order. He calls for all of the United States forces (both land and the navy) to begin a general advance toward the confederate army by February 22nd, George Washington's birthday.
  • Fort Henery

    Fort Henery
    Led by Ulysses S. Grant, the Union sucessfully captures Fort Henry in Tennessee. Ten days later they also take over Fort Donelson from the Confederates. The Union gives Grant the nickname "Unconditional Surrender."
  • Changing Marine Battle

    Changing Marine Battle
    The Confederate Ironclad ship called the Merrimac, sinks two Union wooden ship. After it desttroys the two ships it fights till a draw with the Union Ironclad called the Monitor to a draw. This changed the way Marines faught forever. No longer would wodden boats be allowed in battle.

    Shiloh
    Confederates carry out a surprise attack on Ulysses S. Grant and the Union at Shiloh on the Tennessee River. Unprepared, the battle results in 13, 000 Union killed and wounded and 10, 000 Confederates. This caused more deaths and injuries than all the previous battles combined. When the President offeres to relive Grant, he refuses.
  • Full Speed Ahead

    Full Speed Ahead
    Union Ships move up to the Mississippi River and then take over New Orleans, the South's greatest port. Later in the battle, sailing through a Rebel mine field Farragut says the famous phrase "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"
  • Second Battle of Bull Run

    Second Battle of Bull Run
    The Confederates defeat the Union at the second Battle of Bull Run in northern Virginia. The Union Army retreats to Washington.
    This was a significant victory for the Confederates and another defeat for the Union. Union casualties were about 10,000 killed and wounded out of 62,000 soilders; the Confederates lost about 1,300 killed and 7,000 wounded out of 50,000 troops. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNtzxJHCArI
  • Antietam

    This was the bloodiest day in U.S military history, Gen. Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Armies are attacked at Antietam, Maryland. This showed the strength and determination of the Union forces. By the first night 26, 000 mean are dead, wounded or MIA. Lee then retreats.

    A first draft of the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing slaves is written and issued by President Lincoln.
  • Fredericksburg

    Fredericksburg
    The Potomac army, led by Gen Burnside, suffers a defeat at Fredricksburg Virginia. After 14 frontal assaults on the Confederates, the Union looeses 12, 653 men. One union soldier makes the statement " "We might as well have tried to take hell." The Confederates only lose 5,309 men.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    President Lincoln writes the final Emancipation Proclamation which will free all the slaves in Confederate states and promote enlisting of black soldiers in the Union Army.   • Gettysburg

On the first day the Confederates out numbered the Union and the North had to retreat to Gettysburg. By the second day all the troops arrived and Union numbers were greater than Confederates. Lee decided to make an all or nothing attack but the Union lines held. Casualties at Gettysburg totaled 23,049 for the Union. Confederate casualties were 28,063 , more than a third of Lee’s army.

    The Union Army led by Gen. Hooker is defeated by Lee's much smaller forces at the Battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia. This resulted to Lee's battle tactics he used. A confederate general Stonewall Jackson is mortally wounded by his own soldiers. Hooker retreats his army. Union losses are 17,000 killed, wounded and missing, out of 130,000. The Confederates, 13, 000 out of 60,000.
  • Stonewall Jackson Dies

    Stonewall Jackson Dies
    The South suffers a major loss as a confederate general, Stonewall Jackson dies from his wounds, his last words were, "Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees."
    "I have lost my right arm," Lee says while in mourning.
  • Chickamauga

    Chickamauga
    The battle at Chicamauga resulted in a Confederate victory under General Braxton Bragg and his army. This left the Union Army led by General William S. Rosecrans trapped in Chattanooga Tennessee under Confederate capture.

This speech is known as one of the greatest speeches of all time and describes the importance of this war and how America will grow.

    The Confederates seige Chattanooga which ends when Union Forces under Grant defeat the army. This is where one of the most dramatic moments happens. The Union was yelling "Chickamauga!" The Union's goal is to avenge their loss at Chickamauga. They do this by running up the face of Missionary Ridge without any orders to do so and attack the Rebels. "My God, come and see 'em run!" a Union remarks during the battle.
  • Cold Harbour

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lx9px2 A huge mistake by General Grant results in 7,000 Union casualties in only twenty minutes during an attack against a strong army of Rebels at Cold Harbor in Virginia. Many of the soldiers predicted this failure. A dead soldier from Massachusetts wrote his last entry in his diary that said, "June 3, 1864, Cold Harbor, Virginia. I was killed."

    Abraham Lincoln is re-elected president. He has defeated the Democrat opposition, George B. McClellan. He had 55% of the popular vote and 212 of 233 electoral votes. Lincoln gives a speech shortly after that says "I earnestly believe that the consequences of this day's work will be to the lasting advantage, if not the very salvation, of the country,"
  • Weakning the Confederates

    Weakning the Confederates
    General Hood's Confederate Army of 23,000 is defeated at Nashville by 55,000 Union Troops including African American troops under the command of Gen. George H. Thomas. The Confederate Army of Tennessee ceases as an effective fighting force.
  • The Thirteenth Amendment

    The Thirteenth Amendment
    The U.S. Congress approves the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. This states that to slavery is abolished. The amendment is then submitted to the states to be ratified.
  • Peace Denied

    Peace Denied
    In an attempt to end the war, Lincoln meets with Alexander Stephans, Vice President of the Confederates at a peace conference. The meeting ends in a failture meaning the war will continue.
  • Inauguration Round Two

    President Lincoln has his Inauguration Ceremony in Washington.In his speech he says, "With malice toward none; with charity for all...let us strive on to finish the work we are in...to do all which may achieve and cherish a just, and a lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations."
  • The War is Over!

    The War is Over!
    Gen. Robert E. Lee surrenders his Confederate Army to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at the village of Appomattox Court House in Virginia. Grant lets Confederate officers to keep their horses and mules as compensation. This concludes four years of fighting and tradgedy. After, Lee tells his troops, "After four years of arduous service marked by unsurpassed courage and fortitude the Army of Northern Virginia has been compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources,"

    The era post civil war. This era was faced with the struggle of trying to fix problems and answer questions posed by the civil war. For America this is a darker time of their history as the country was faced with many problems trying to reunite the union.
  • Andrew Johnson

    Andrew Johnson, the former Vice President is sworn into office following the assasination of Linoln.
  • Lincoln Shot

    Lincoln Shot
    Lincoln and his wife Mary go to see the play "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theater. At 10:13 p.m., during the third act of the play, John Wilkes Booth shoots the president in the head. Doctors made an effort but were unable to save the President.
  • The Burrial of Lincoln

    Abraham Lincoln is finally laid to rest in Oak Ridge Cemetery, outside Springfield, Illinois.
  • Thirteenth Amendment Passed

    Thirteenth Amendment Passed
    The Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, is passed by Congress. Slavery is finally abolished. Everything the Union fought for has payed off.
  • Ku Klux Klan

    Ku Klux Klan
    The KKK was created post civil war. The groups goal was to overthrow states goverened by republicans in the south. The group is most famous for torturing former slaves, and anyone who helped them during the civil war. This group still exists today but to a lesser degree.
  • 14th Amendment

    The fourteenth Amendment to the constitution addresses citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws. This was proposed to give former slaves more apart of the american community.
  • Ulysses S. Grant For President

    Grant wins the 1968 election with 52% of the votes. The republicans remain in power during this era of reconstruction.
  • 15th Amendment

    The fifteenth Amendment to the consitution states that no man shall be denied the right to vote based on their race.
