  • Harriet Tubman and the underground railroad

    Harriet Tubman and the underground railroad
    Harriet Tubman started using the underground railroad to help free slaves. She was a "conductor" which meant that she was the one who lead people to the North then to Canada. She was also a spy, nurse during the civil war, and a guerrilla soldier.
  • The Kansas Nebraska Act

    The Kansas Nebraska Act
    A law passed that stated that the people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska decide whether slavery is allowed in their borders or not by themselves.
  • John Brown’s Raid on Harpers Ferry

    John Brown’s Raid on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown lead a raid on federal military arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. He and a group of his supporters went along with the raid. His intend was to hopefully rise a slavery rebellion.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    Abraham Lincoln was a nominee along side John C. Breckrinridge. Abraham Lincoln had stated that he was against the spread of slavery. He hoped that one day it would end.
  • Confederate States of America is formed

    Confederate States of America is formed
    In February of 1861, seven states had left the United States. On the fourth of February of that same year, many representatives from the South came together to form the Confederates States of America.
  • Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter
    Located in Charleston Harbor, it was a fort the belonged to the North. On April 12, 1861 the South surrounded the fort, the fort was low on supplies. Lincoln either surrendered to the South or tried to send supplies but the South would start firing at the fort. Lincoln tried to send supplies and the South started to fire. Those were the first shots in the civil war and the war started.

    The Civil War started at Fort Sumter, with the South firing first.
  • Battle of Bull Run

    Battle of Bull Run
    The South tried to stop the Union's troops from reaching the capital of the Confederates. Robert E. Lee also was trying to go north into Northern territory.
  • Jefferson Davis elected

    Jefferson Davis elected
    Jefferson Davis was elected to be the president for the Confederacy. Davis was asked to be the president, he did not want to assume the job.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    On January 1,1863 President Abraham Lincoln passed the Emancipation Proclamation that stated that all slaves are free that are in the rebellious states. This meant that the states that were still with the Union that was a slave state, could keep their slaves. Except the Confederacy states, they had to free their slave.
  • Gettysburg Battle

    Gettysburg Battle
    General Lee wanted to try to invade the North. He wanted to try to end the war sooner by invading. His plan failed for the Union stopped his and his troops. The war continued and the Union won a major battle.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea

    Sherman's March to the Sea
    General Sherman and his troops marched to the sea, to try to intimidate the people of Georgia. He practiced total war, he stole food and livestock. To try to get the people to leave the Confederate cause.
  • 13th Amendment

    13th Amendment
    The 13th Amendment states that slavery has ended forever. The amendment also states that the practice of unconditional enslavement.
  • Ulysses S. Grant Appomattox Court house

    Ulysses S. Grant Appomattox Court house
    The Confederates General Robert E. Lee surrendered with his 28,000 troops. He surrenders to Union General Ulysses S. Grant in the Appomattox Court House. This ended the American Civil War.
  • Abraham Lincoln Assassination

    Abraham Lincoln Assassination
    Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at the Ford's Theater. Booth was an actor, he shot Lincoln at 10 pm on the 14th of April. Lincoln died the next day.
  • 14th Amendment

    14th Amendment
    The 14th amendment grants anyone born or raised in the United States citizenship. This also included the former slaves that had just been freed from slavery after the war ended.
  • 15th Amendment

    15th Amendment
    The 15th amendment states that no person shall be denied of votes. No matter what race, color, or if they had been a slave.
