  • The Invention of the Cotton Gin

    The Invention of the Cotton Gin
    -Eli Whitney invented the Cotton Gin. Some believe that it was Catherine Greene's idea. Also, Whitney and Phineas Miller formed a cotton gin manuafacturing company.
    -This invention offered Southern planters a justification to maintain and expand slavery.
    -The invention of the cotton gin took place on March 14, 1794.
    -It is important because it revolutionized the production of cotton by speeding up the process of removing seeds from the cotton.
    -It should a conflict because it increased slavery.
  • Embargo Act

    Embargo Act
    -The Embargo Act was passed by the U.S. Congress and signed by President Thomas Jefferson.
    -The U.S Government prohibited foreign trade because of the conflict with Britain.
    -It was signed in Washington, DC.
    -It was signed on December 22, 1807.
    -The Embargo Act was important because it increased smuggling in the U.S and showed that the United States could break away from Britain.
    -The act was a conlflict because unemployment and smuggling increased. Ultimately, the act was repealed.
  • Misouri Compromise

    Misouri Compromise
    -The Congress passed the compromise.
    -The compromise drew an imaginary line across the former Louisana Territory. Tension began to rise between pro-slavery and anti-slavery.
    -The compromise took place in March, 1820.
    -The Missouri Compromise would settle the delicate balance.
    -Ths is a compromise because it held the Union together for more than 30 years.
  • Tariff of Abominations

    Tariff of Abominations
    -It was passed by the House of Representatives and President John Quincy Adams approcvd the bill. Calhoun later took credit for the doctrine.
    -The tariff taxed all foreign goods to boost the sales of the U.S. products.
    -It showed a conflict because the bill would reduce exports from Southern states and unemployment rose again.
    -The Bill was approved on May 19, 1828. It took effect in year 1832. -It was important because it protected the U.S. industry from competing against European products.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    -Senator Henry Clay proposed a series of resoultions. Senator John Calhoun made a speach against the Compromise but it wasn'st strong enough so Senator James Murrary read it.
    -Slave trade was abolished in Washington.
    -The compromise took place on January 29, 1850.
    -It was important because the Fugitive Slave Act was amended and there was a boundary dispute between Texas and New Mexico.
    -It was a conflict because it caused a controversy because it made the Northern states abide by Southern states
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    -Harriet Beecher Stowe is the author of the book and was greeted by Abraham Lincoln as "the little lady who started the war."
    -It is viewed as a major cause of the Civil War.
    -The book was published in March, 1852.
    -It was important because it shed light on slavery and sparked a controversy.
    -It was a conflict because it was one of the biggest factors of the Civil War.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    -Stephen Douglas proposed the act and President Franklin Pierce gave support.
    -The people could now decide if they wanted their state to be a free state or a slave state. The idea of "popular sovereignity" was introduced.
    -This took place on January 4, 1854.
    -It was important because it split two major political parties and created another.
    -It was a conflict because it split Northern and Southern relations.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas was a series of violent political confrontations in the U.S involving anti & pro slavery and free-state people. It happened in the territory of Kansas and it was led by John Brown. It was like a pro and anti slavery war.
  • Dred Scott Case

    -Dred Scott (a slave)
    -He argued that from the time he spent as a free slave he was entitled to emancipation.
    -He spent time with his master is a free state before returning to Missouri (Slave state).
    -Chief Justice Roger ( a pro-slave) said a slave could not, therefore the case was irrelevant.
    -It was a conflict because it made the issue of slavery a more relevant topic in the Court system.
  • John Brown's Raid

    John Brown planned to instigate a major slave rebelion in the South. He went to Haper's Ferry, Virginia. The plan was a failure from the start because he had no back up plan but it ended up depeening the divide between the North and South.
  • Election of 1860

    Democrats met in Charleston, SC to select their candidate for President. Abraham Lincoln barely won with only 40% of the popular vote and 180 electoral votes.
  • South Carolina Secedes from Union

    South Carolina called for a convention to secede from the union. 3 months into Lincoln's election, 7 states had seceded from the Union. Forming the Confederates.
