    In 1853, Clara Barton established the first free public school in New Jersey. She did regonize the need for free education in that state. She saw many children and their families that could not pay for their education, so she decided to open a free school, which many people did disagree with that.

    After a male pricipal was appinted at her own school, she resigned and moved to Washington D.C., where she became the first woman to work for the U.S. Patent Office. She worked as a clerk, and she did receive the same amount of pay as the men did. She was around the first women to receive the same pay as men, and the first woman to hold a government job.

    In the year of 1862, Clara Barton helped the Union Army in multiple battles. She helped out, as a nurse, in the Battle of Fredericksburg, Antietam, Second Manassas, and Cedar Mountain. Her hard work of saving the Union soldiers got her the nickname, "Angel of the Battlefield."

    In 1865, after the Civil War had ended, President Abraham Lincoln appointed Clara Barton as the General Correspondent for the Friends of Paroled Soldiers. Her job was to locate missing soldiers. To do so, she established the Bureau of Records of Missing Men of the Armies of the United States. She ended up solving the mysteries of thousands of soldiers.

    In 1881, at the age of 60 years, she founded the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross was devoted to help people who are in need of anything, like supplies and care, and it still is today. She lead this organization for 23 years, from the year it began to 1904.
